SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 is the ETSI/European Standard that gives the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. two (DSS2) frame relay service. It is the form a supplier completes to declare which parts of the EN 301 174-1 protocol are implemented, for either the user role or the network role. In practice, it is used to describe an implementation in a way that can be checked consistently during conformance assessment.

What does SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 specify?

SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 specifies the PICS proforma for the DSS2 protocol used for the B-ISDN Frame Relaying bearer service. It follows the guidance of ISO/IEC 9646-7 and ETS 300 406, and it is intended to be completed by suppliers of implementations that claim conformance to EN 301 174-1.

The document is organized as a short core standard plus two normative annexes. Clause 1 defines the scope, clause 2 lists references, clause 3 gives definitions and abbreviations, and clause 4 states how conformance to the proforma is to be shown.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AThe PICS proforma for EN 301 174-1, including guidance, identification fields, roles, and item tables
Annex BA requirements list that repeats selected basic call PICS items needed for EN 301 174-1

The standard is about stating implementation support, not about defining test methods. The foreword says later parts of the series provide the test specifications.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005?

SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 requires the supplier to complete the PICS proforma in Annex A and to keep its numbering, naming, and order if a conforming PICS is produced. That matters because conformance statements must stay comparable across products and suppliers.

Identification and conformance statement

Annex A asks for identification of the date, the Implementation Under Test (IUT), the System Under Test (SUT), the supplier, the client if different, and a PICS contact person. The global conformance statement asks whether all mandatory capabilities are implemented, so the reviewer can quickly see whether the implementation claims full conformance.

Role selection

The proforma requires exactly one major role to be supported: the user role or the network role. That matters because the rest of the questionnaire depends on which side of the interface the implementation represents.

User role capabilities

For the user role, the proforma asks about single-step call control with one virtual connection supporting one Frame Relay connection, and about user plane procedures using AAL type 5 CPCS and FR-SSCS. Annex A also asks about AAL parameter indication and negotiation, which tells the reader whether the implementation handles the optional AAL-related behavior around the frame relay service.

PDU parameters and information elements

Annex A checks support for information elements in CONNECT and SETUP messages, both received and sent. It also asks about the content coding of the Broadband bearer capability information element, including the Frame Relaying bearer service and the User information Layer 2 protocol. In practice, this means the implementer must show which message fields are understood, generated, and transparently carried.

Network role behavior

For the network role, Annex A includes support for an Interworking Function with a Public Data Network (PDN) providing Frame Relay Data Transmission Service (FRDTS). It also checks the transparent carriage of certain parameters between user and network, so the network implementation can pass information onward without altering its meaning.

Basic call dependencies

Annex B repeats selected basic call PICS items needed for EN 301 174-1. It highlights AAL parameters, AAL type 5, forward and backward maximum CPCS-SDU size, and Frame relay SSCS, which are the key items a supplier must already address in the related basic call PICS.

What terms does SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 define?

Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) - A supplier statement describing which capabilities of an implementation are supported against a given specification.

Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) - An ICS that applies to a protocol implementation.

ICS proforma - A questionnaire-style document that becomes a completed ICS when filled in for a specific implementation.

Implementation Under Test (IUT) - The implementation being assessed for conformance.

System Under Test (SUT) - The wider system in which the IUT resides.

User role - The side of the DSS2 frame relay service handled as the user-facing implementation in the proforma.

Network role - The network-facing side of the proforma, used for network implementations.

AAL - Adaptation layer referred to in the basic call items and in the Annex B requirements list.

Who uses SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005?

SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 is used by protocol suppliers, implementers, test engineers, and conformance assessors. A supplier uses it to declare which features are implemented. A quality manager or buyer can use it to compare offerings and check whether a product is claiming the right user or network role. Test teams use the completed PICS to prepare conformance tests and to understand which message elements and capabilities should be present.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005?

EN 301 174-1 defines the protocol specification for the frame relay service that this PICS describes. ETS 300 406 gives the conformance testing methodology used by the series. ISO/IEC 9646-1 provides the general conformance testing framework, and ISO/IEC 9646-7 gives the rules for ICS documents and proformas.

EN 300 443-1 and ETS 300 443-2 are the basic call/bearer control specification and its PICS proforma, which Annex B uses for related items. The scope also states that EN 301 174-1 is an endorsement of ITU-T Recommendation Q.2933.

What does the SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005 document contain?

The document contains guidance for completing a PICS, identification fields for the implementation and supplier, a role selection table, and separate user and network role tables. Annex A includes questions on major capabilities, subsidiary capabilities, PDUs, information elements, parameter coding, timers, and call states, with support markings and conditional logic. Annex B contains a requirements list for selected basic call items tied to EN 301 174-1 and the basic call PICS. The structure is built as a questionnaire, so the completed document can be used directly for conformance declaration and later test planning.

ETSIEN 301 174-2 V1.1.3 (1999-03)9A.1.2Abbreviations and conventionsThe PICS proforma contained in this annex is comprised of information in tabular form in accordance with theguidelines presented in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [6].Item columnThe item column contains a number which identifies the item in the table.Item description columnThe item description column describes in free text each respective item (e.g. parameters, timers, etc.). It implicitlymeans "is supported by the implementation?".Status columnThe following notations, defined in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [6], are used for the status column:m:mandatory - the capability is required to be supported.o:optional - the capability may be supported or not.n/a:not applicable - in the given context, it is impossible to use the capability.x:prohibited (excluded) - there is a requirement not to use this capability in the given context.o.i:qualified optional - for mutually exclusive or selectable options from a set. "i" is an integer whichidentifies an unique group of related optional items and the logic of their selection which is definedimmediately following the table.NOTE 1:In the case where items of the group do not always belong to the same table, all o.i shall be defined in thelast subclause of the PICS proforma, and the text "which is defined immediately following the table"should be replaced by "which is defined in the last subclause of this annex".ci:Conditional - the requirement on the capability ("m", "o", "x" or "n/a") depends on the support ofother optional or conditional items. "i" is an integer identifying an unique conditional statusexpression which is defined immediately following the table.c: o:conditional optional - the capability may be supported or not if the hierarchically precedingcapability is supported.c: m:conditional mandatory - the capability is required to be supported if the hierarchically precedingcapability is supported.Reference columnThe reference column makes reference to EN 301 174-1 [3], except where explicitly stated otherwise.Support columnThe support column shall be filled in by the supplier of the implementation. The following common notations, defined inISO/IEC 9646-7 [6], are used for the support column:Y or y:supported by the implementation.N or n:not supported by the implementation.N/A, n/a or -:no answer required (allowed only if the status is n/a, directly or after evaluation of a conditionalstatus).SIST EN 301 174-2 V1.1.3:2005

ETSIEN 301 174-2 V1.1.3 (1999-03)10If this PICS proforma is completed in order to describe a multiple-profile support in a system, it is necessary to be ableto answer that a capability is supported for one profile and not supported for another. In that case, the supplier shallenter the unique reference to a conditional expression, preceded by "?" (e.g. ?3). This expression shall be given in thespace for comments provided at the bottom of the table. It uses predicates defined in the SCS, each of which refers to asingle profile and which takes the value TRUE if and only if that profile is to be used.EXAMPLE 1:?3:IF prof1 THEN Y ELSE N.It is also possible to provide a comment to an answer in the space provided at the bottom of the table.NOTE 2:As stated in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [6], support for a received PDU requires the ability to parse all validparameters of that PDU. Supporting a PDU while having no ability to parse a valid parameter isnon-conformant. Support for a parameter on a PDU means that the semantics of that parameter aresupported.Values allowed columnThe values allowed column contains the type, the list, the range, or the length of values allowed. The following notationsare used:-range of values: . example: 5 . 20-list of values:, , ., example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 9example:'1101'B, '1011'B, '1111'Bexample:'0A'H, '34'H, '2F'H-list of named values:(), (), ., (example: reject(1), accept(2)-length:size ( . )example:size (1 . 8)Values supported columnThe values supported column shall be filled in by the supplier of the implementation. In this column, the values or theranges of values supported by the implementation shall be indicated.References to itemsFor each possible item answer (answer in the support column) within the PICS proforma a unique reference exists, used, for example, in the conditional expressions. It is defined as the table identifier, followed by a solidus character "/",followed by the item number in the table. If there is more than one support column in a table, the columns arediscriminated by letters (a, b, etc.), respectively.EXAMPLE 2:A.5/4 is the reference to the answer of item 4 in table 5 of annex A.EXAMPLE 3:A.6/3b is the reference to the second answer (i.e. in the second support column) of item 3 in table 6of annex A.Prerequisite lineA prerequisite line takes the form: Prerequisite: .A prerequisite line after a clause or table title indicates that the whole clause or the whole table is not required to becomplete
