Overview
SIST EN ISO 1120:2026 sets out a static test method for measuring the strength of mechanical fastenings in textile conveyor belts. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with ISO 1120:2025, this international standard provides a uniform approach to ensuring mechanical joints-whether employing connecting rods or not-meet safety and performance requirements. Notably, this standard does not apply to vulcanized joints or light conveyor belts covered by ISO 21183-1.
Mechanical fastenings are a critical component in maintaining conveyor belt integrity, particularly in demanding industrial environments. The static test prescribed by the standard is designed to eliminate mechanical fastenings of insufficient static strength, ensuring only reliable joints are used in service.
Key Topics
- Scope of the Test: Defines procedures for evaluating mechanical fastenings, with or without connecting rods, in textile conveyor belts.
- Exclusions: Does not cover vulcanized joints or light conveyor belts as per ISO 21183-1.
- Test Principle: A tensile force is applied to a prepared test specimen until rupture occurs at the mechanical joint.
- Sample Preparation:
- Test pieces are collected perpendicular to the belt axis.
- Minimum distances from belt edges and minimum sample dimensions are defined.
- Conditioning and Test Conditions: Samples must be conditioned for a specified period at a controlled temperature environment (referring to ISO 18573), with records documented in the test report.
- Testing Procedures:
- Separate, detailed steps for fastenings with or without connecting rods.
- Tensile force must be applied symmetrically to prevent premature joint failure.
- Results and Reporting:
- Expresses results as the mean breaking force per millimetre width and as a percentage of nominal belt strength.
- Specifies detailed reporting requirements, including type of failure, environmental conditions, and test specifics.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 1120:2026 is essential for industries relying on textile conveyor belts, such as:
- Mining and Quarrying: For high-load conveyors where joint integrity directly impacts safety and downtime.
- Materials Handling: In warehouses and ports, where reliable belt repair and maintenance are crucial.
- Manufacturing: For process lines requiring quick conveyor belt repairs with mechanical fastenings.
- Quality Assurance: Belt manufacturers, maintenance providers, and end users use this test method to qualify mechanical fastener strength before installation.
Implementing this standard helps organizations:
- Confirm mechanical joints meet minimum static strength requirements.
- Minimize the risk of unplanned stops caused by mechanical joint failures.
- Improve occupational safety by using proven, reliable conveyor belt fastenings.
- Provide standardized documentation and traceability for maintenance and procurement processes.
Related Standards
SIST EN ISO 1120:2026 references and complements several other international standards relevant to conveyor belt safety and performance:
- ISO 283 - Textile conveyor belts - Full thickness tensile strength, elongation at break and elongation at the reference load - Test method.
- ISO 18573 - Conveyor belts - Test atmospheres and conditioning periods.
- ISO 21183-1 - Light conveyor belts - Principal characteristics and applications (excluded from the scope of this standard).
By aligning with these related standards, SIST EN ISO 1120:2026 ensures a comprehensive approach to conveyor belt testing and quality assurance.
