Aerospace series - Sleeves, tubular, protruding head, in corrosion resisting steel, passivated (0,25 mm wall thickness)
This document specifies the characteristics and technical requirements for protruding head tubular sleeves, in corrosion resisting steel, which can be plain or provided with a series of annular grooves.
Passivated sleeves are for use in aerospace assemblies whose maximum operating temperature does not exceed 650 °C. It is important that the operating temperatures for aluminium pigmented sleeves do not exceed 230 °C.

Overview
FprEN 3278 defines requirements for aerospace-series tubular sleeves with a protruding head, manufactured in corrosion-resisting steel, passivated, with a nominal 0,25 mm wall thickness. The standard covers plain and grooved sleeve forms, dimensional limits, surface finish, material options, manufacturing method and marking. These sleeves are specified for use in aerospace assemblies with maximum operating temperatures up to 650 °C (note: aluminium-pigmented sleeves must not exceed 230 °C).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Configuration & dimensions: Detailed dimensional tables and tolerances for diameter and length codes (examples: diameter codes 040–100; form codes P = plain, G = grooved). Surface roughness requirements are given relative to figures and tables in the standard.
- Material: Acceptable materials include steels in accordance with EN 2175 or A‑286 CRES (UNS S66286) per SAE AMS 5525, supplied annealed and cold-worked during manufacture.
- Manufacture: Sleeves shall be produced by a drawing process from sheet or strip to form a one‑piece tubular section and head.
- Surface treatment:
- Passivation per EN 2516 or SAE AMS 2700 (method 1 types 6–8 or method 2).
- Optional aluminium-pigmented coating (code “Z”) per EN 4473 Type IV or NAS4006 Class NC - applied to outer surface; inner coating optional. Aluminium‑pigmented sleeves are temperature‑limited to 230 °C.
- Surface appearance: Sleeves must be free from cracks, seams and laps; axial drawing flow lines and slight orange‑peel are permissible if continuous at fillet radius.
- Quality & sampling: Inspection sampling per ISO 2859‑1 (AQL = 1%).
- Designation & marking: Example designation: SLEEVE EN 3278 P 040 045 Z. Marking follows EN 2424, style G; package quantity must be stated.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Who: aerospace OEMs, fastener and sleeve manufacturers, procurement teams, design and stress engineers, quality assurance and inspection teams, maintenance/repair organizations.
- Where: specification of thin‑walled, corrosion‑resistant sleeves used as joining or fastener components in aircraft and aerospace assemblies where controlled dimensions, surface finish and high‑temperature passivation are required.
- Why: ensures interchangeability, corrosion resistance, traceability and consistent quality for critical aerospace fastening components.
