Overview - EN 2713-005:2006 (CO2 laser printable aircraft cables)

EN 2713-005:2006 is a CEN aerospace product standard that defines CO2 laser printable, screened (spiral) and jacketed single‑ and multi‑core electrical cables for on‑board aircraft electrical systems. It covers cables rated for operating temperatures between −55 °C and 200 °C, with marking options by CO2 laser, hot‑stamp or ink‑jet in accordance with EN 3838. The standard addresses materials, construction, required performance and quality assurance for general‑purpose aerospace wiring.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Conductor and core construction
    • Cores comply with EN 2266-003; nominal conductor sizes range from about 0.15 mm² to 5 mm² (AWG equivalents provided in the standard).
    • 1 to 4 cores; 2–4 core cables are twisted per EN 2235.
  • Screen and jacket
    • Screen: nickel‑plated copper stranded spiral (strand dimensions and construction referenced in Table 1 and EN 2083).
    • Outer jacket: polyimide layer (nominal total wall thickness 30 µm) coated both sides with ~2.5 µm fluorocarbon and a top coat dispersion fluorocarbon (minimum 15 µm) formulated for CO2 laser marking.
    • Winding/overlap options specified (single or two-layer windings with minimum overlap percentages).
  • Marking
    • Accepts CO2 laser marking, and alternatively hot‑stamp or ink‑jet; markings must comply with EN 3838.
  • Performance and tests
    • Test regime referenced to EN 3475‑100 and EN 2235: ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation and surface resistance, thermal ageing (tests at ~250 °C for some assessments), thermal endurance (40 000 h at 200 °C), flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 s), smoke density and toxicity, abrasion, notch propagation and plating tests.
  • Quality & designation
    • Quality assurance per EN 9133; formal designation and identification rules provided.

Applications and typical users

  • Intended for on‑board aircraft electrical systems where high temperature resistance and reliable marking are required.
  • Typical users:
    • Aerospace cable manufacturers specifying materials and screen/jacket construction.
    • Aerospace electrical designers and harness engineers selecting wiring for high‑temperature zones.
    • Procurement, qualification and quality managers verifying supplier compliance.
    • Maintenance and MRO teams requiring durable, readable cable marking for traceability.

Related standards

  • EN 2713-002 (screened and jacketed - general)
  • EN 2235 (single & multicore screened/jacketed technical spec)
  • EN 2266-003 (core conductors)
  • EN 3475-100 (test methods)
  • EN 3838 (user‑applied markings)
  • EN 2083 (copper conductor requirements)
  • EN 9133 (quality management / qualification)

This standard is essential when specifying CO2 laser printable, screened and jacketed aerospace cables for high‑temperature aircraft installations and for ensuring traceable, durable markings and verified performance.
