Electroacoustics - Simulators of human head and ear - Part 3: Acoustic coupler for the calibration of supra-aural earphones used in audiometry
IEC 60318-3:2014 specifies an acoustic coupler for the measurement of supra-aural audiometric earphones in the frequency range from 125 Hz to 8 000 Hz. The sound pressure developed by an earphone is not, in general, the same in the coupler as in a person's ear. However, the acoustic coupler can be used as an objective and reproducible means of measuring the output of supra-aural earphones. It can be used for specifying reference equivalent threshold sound pressure levels for the calibration of audiometers. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998 and constitutes a technical revision which includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- adjustment of terms and wording to the other parts of IEC 60318;
- introduction of maximum permitted uncertainties;
- and revised requirements for static pressure equalization.

- réajustement des termes et formulation par rapport aux autres parties de l'IEC 60318;
- introduction des incertitudes maximales permises;

Overview
EN 60318-3:2015 (adoption of IEC 60318-3:2014) is a European/CENELEC standard in the field of electroacoustics that specifies an acoustic coupler for the objective, reproducible measurement and calibration of supra-aural audiometric earphones. The coupler is intended for measurements in the 125 Hz to 8 000 Hz range and is used to establish reference equivalent threshold sound pressure levels (RETSPL) for audiometer calibration - a critical step in accurate hearing assessment, diagnosis of deafness, and fitting of hearing aids.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines an acoustic coupler as a measurement device where a calibrated microphone is coupled to an earphone via a cavity of predetermined shape and volume.
- Frequency range: Calibration and measurements specified from 125 Hz to 8 000 Hz.
- Cavity geometry and tolerances: Critical coupler dimensions and acoustic volume are specified to ensure reproducibility (e.g., nominal effective acoustic volume and precise cavity dimensions, and a 45° slope angle requirement).
- Microphone requirements: Use of calibrated, high‑impedance diaphragms consistent with IEC 61094-1 (laboratory standard microphones).
- Static pressure equalization: Revised requirements to control the coupler’s response to atmospheric and static pressure differences.
- Measurement uncertainty: Introduction of maximum permitted uncertainties and guidance to account for laboratory measurement uncertainty when assessing conformity.
- Coupling and calibration method: Guidance on how to couple supra‑aural earphones to the coupler and perform reference calibrations used to derive RETSPL values.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN 60318-3:
- Audiology laboratories and clinics validating audiometers.
- Calibration laboratories and national metrology institutes.
- Headphone and audiometer manufacturers performing product verification and quality control.
- Regulatory bodies and conformity assessment organizations setting calibration requirements.
Typical applications:
- Establishing RETSPLs for audiometer calibration.
- Routine verification of supra‑aural earphone output during manufacturing or field service.
- Ensuring traceable, repeatable audiometric measurements that support clinical diagnosis of hearing loss and the reliable fitting of hearing aids.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.

The article discusses a standard, SIST EN 60318-3:2015, that specifies an acoustic coupler used to measure the performance of supra-aural audiometric earphones. The acoustic coupler is designed to measure sound pressure in the frequency range of 125 Hz to 8,000 Hz. While the sound pressure in the coupler may not be the same as in a person's ear, it can be used as an objective and reproducible method for measuring the output of supra-aural earphones. This coupler is useful for calibrating audiometers and establishing reference equivalent threshold sound pressure levels (RETSPL).
