SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 61558-2-13:2009, published by SIST and based on IEC 61558-2-13:2009. It specifies safety requirements and tests for auto transformers and power supply units incorporating auto transformers for general applications, including transformers with electronic circuits, with supply voltages up to 1 100 V. In practice, it is the part of the EN 61558 series to use when the product is an auto-transformer-based unit rather than a separate-winding transformer.

What does SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 specify?

SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 gives particular requirements and tests for the safety of auto transformers and power supply units incorporating auto transformers. It supplements and modifies the general requirements in EN 61558-1 / IEC 61558-1, so the two parts are used together.

The scope covers stationary or portable, single-phase or polyphase, air-cooled dry-type transformers, with encapsulated or non-encapsulated windings. It also covers transformers incorporating electronic circuits. The document is intended for products used where the installation rules or end product standard do not require insulation between circuits.

The standard is organized into clauses 1 to 28, covering scope, references, terms, ratings, marking, electrical protection, construction, insulation, and mechanical and environmental resistance. It also includes annexes for creepage distances and related insulation coordination.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex CCreepage distances, clearances and distances through insulation for material group II
Annex DCreepage distances, clearances and distances through insulation for material group I
Annex RExplanations for applying IEC 60664-1:2007 in relation to creepage and clearance values

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010?

SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 sets rating limits, marking rules, output-voltage checks, and construction requirements that are specific to auto transformers. For manufacturers and test labs, the important point is that the product has to be identified, rated, and tested as an auto-transformer product, not just as a generic transformer.

Ratings and operating limits

Clause 6 limits the rated supply voltage to 1 100 V a.c. and the rated supply and internal operating frequencies to 500 Hz. It also sets limits for core power and rated output, with separate values for single-phase and polyphase transformers. In practice, this means the nameplate and the design both have to stay within the declared electrical envelope.

Clause 6 also limits the rated output voltage to 1 000 V a.c. or 1 415 V ripple-free d.c., and for independent transformers the output must be above 50 V a.c. or 120 V ripple-free d.c. The standard gives a formula linking core power and rated output, and it treats electrically connected separate windings differently. That matters when you calculate the transformer size and decide whether a design falls inside the part.

Marking and identification

Clause 8 requires the transformer to be marked with one of the graphical symbols for a fail-safe auto-transformer, a non-short-circuit proof auto-transformer, or a short-circuit proof auto-transformer. If there is a terminal for connection to the star point, the maximum current to the star point has to be marked. In practice, the marking tells users how the transformer behaves and how it may be connected.

No-load and loaded output

Clause 12 requires the no-load output voltage to be measured at rated supply voltage, rated frequency, and ambient temperature. For independent transformers, the no-load output has to stay within the stated upper and lower limits, and the difference between no-load output voltage and output voltage under load is limited by rating and transformer type in Table 101. This is the part that tells a test laboratory what to measure to check voltage regulation.

Construction and polarity safety

Clause 19.106 addresses plug-connected auto-transformers where the input voltage is higher than the output voltage. The output socket must not have a potential to earth higher than the rated output voltage, and the standard allows this to be achieved either by a polarised plug-and-socket system or by a polarity-detecting device. The practical effect is that a product may need a specific connector arrangement or a sensing-and-switching function to avoid unsafe output polarity.

Clause 19.111 requires protection against direct contact with live parts, including the contact path and drive. For design and inspection, this means exposed conductive paths and operating parts have to be checked for access to live parts.

Insulation coordination and clearances

Clause 18 modifies some of the insulation tests from Part 1, including parts of Tables 7 and 8a. Clause 26.101 and Annexes C, D and R allow values for creepage distance, clearance and distance through insulation above 1 000 V to be found by extrapolation. This matters because the standard extends to 1 100 V and the insulation design has to follow the higher-voltage conditions.

What terms does SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 define?

  • auto-transformer - a transformer in which the input and output windings have a common part.
  • core power - the power that would be transformed by the core if it were used in a transformer with separate windings under the same voltage, frequency, power factor and thermal conditions.
  • fail-safe auto-transformer - the auto-transformer category identified by symbol 60417-5941.
  • non-short-circuit proof auto-transformer - the auto-transformer category identified by symbol 60417-5942.
  • short-circuit proof auto-transformer - the auto-transformer category identified by symbol 60417-5943, either inherently or non-inherently.
  • CTI - the index used in Annexes C and D to place insulating material into material group I or II for creepage and clearance values.

Who uses SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010?

SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 is used by manufacturers, design engineers, and test laboratories working on auto transformers and power supply units incorporating auto transformers. It is also relevant to quality managers, certification bodies, and purchasers who need to specify or verify compliance for general-purpose transformer products.

In practice, users apply it when designing ratings, selecting markings, checking output voltage behavior, proving insulation distances, and running safety tests. It is especially relevant when the product uses an auto-transformer arrangement rather than isolated input and output windings.

What changed in SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 replaces SIST EN 61558-2-13:2000 and EN 61558-2-13:2000. The document states that this is a technical revision.

The main changes stated for this edition are:

  • updating the part in line with Part 1 / EN 61558-1:2005
  • increasing the supply voltages up to 1 100 V
  • aligning the scope with the standards of TC 14

Which standards are used with SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010?

SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 is used together with EN 61558-1 / IEC 61558-1, which provides the general requirements and tests for the series. This part supplements and modifies Part 1, so Part 1 supplies the general framework and this document supplies the auto-transformer-specific rules.

IEC 61558-2-16 is named in the bibliography note for switch mode power supply units and transformers for switch mode power supply units. It is relevant when the product is a switch mode power supply unit rather than a linear power supply unit.

Annex R refers to IEC 60664-1:2007 for the application of creepage and clearance concepts. That matters for insulation coordination when working voltages are high.

What does the SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 document contain?

The document contains the full clause structure for scope, references, terms, ratings, classification, marking, protection against electric shock, output voltage behavior, short-circuit voltage, heating, protection against overload, mechanical strength, ingress protection, insulation, construction, components, wiring, terminals, earthing, screws and connections, creepage distances, fire and tracking resistance, and rust resistance.

It also includes three figures showing winding arrangements and tappings, and one table for output voltage difference under load. Those items are used in design review and test planning because they show which winding arrangements are covered and how voltage regulation is assessed.

The annexes add the insulation-distance material groups and the explanatory material for applying IEC 60664-1:2007. In practice, these annexes are the parts used when a design has to be checked for clearance, creepage, and insulation distance at higher voltages.
