Overview

SIST EN ISO 18393-1:2024 is a European and international standard that specifies a test method for determining the settlement of loose-fill thermal insulation products applied horizontally in ventilated attics. This standard simulates the effects of humidity and temperature cycling on insulation materials to assess their performance and durability over time. Developed by ISO/TC 163 in collaboration with CEN/TC 88, it provides a standardized approach to evaluate how loose-fill insulation settles, which is crucial for maintaining thermal efficiency and energy performance in buildings.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: The standard focuses on loose-fill insulation materials such as granules, nodules, beads, powder, or fibers blown or installed in ventilated attic spaces. It addresses how the insulation thickness decreases over time (settlement) due to environmental factors.

  • Test Methodology: The procedure involves blowing insulation material into a container designed to simulate attic conditions, followed by subjecting it to controlled cycles of temperature (5°C to 60°C) and relative humidity (15% to 85%). Thickness measurements are taken periodically to evaluate settlement.

  • Specimen Preparation: Insulation is installed to a thickness of 300 mm or adjusted for larger test containers, following manufacturer guidelines and standards. Pre-conditioning and stabilization at controlled humidity and temperature levels ensure consistent results.

  • Measurement and Reporting: Thickness is measured visually at nine points in the container using rulers or optical methods with an accuracy of 1 mm. Results are expressed as a percentage decrease from the initial installed thickness, providing a quantitative measure of settlement.

  • Climate Chamber Specifications: The test requires a climate chamber that maintains precise humidity and temperature cycling to replicate real attic environments accurately.

  • Quality and Accuracy: The standard includes requirements on the number of test specimens, conditioning time, and calibration to ensure repeatability and comparability of results.

Applications

  • Building Thermal Insulation Performance: SIST EN ISO 18393-1:2024 helps manufacturers, testing labs, and regulatory bodies assess how loose-fill attic insulation behaves under fluctuating climatic conditions, ensuring products maintain energy efficiency over time.

  • Product Development and Certification: Insulation producers use this standard to validate product performance, optimize formulations, and achieve compliance with building codes and energy standards.

  • Quality Control and Installation Guidelines: The standard supports contractors and quality inspectors in verifying that installed densities and thicknesses meet specified limits to prevent premature settlement-related energy losses.

  • Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: By understanding settlement characteristics, stakeholders can select appropriate insulation solutions for ventilated attics, contributing to reduced building energy consumption and improved indoor comfort.

Related Standards

  • ISO 12570: Hygrothermal performance of building materials - Determination of moisture content by drying at elevated temperature, referenced for conditioning specimens.

  • Other Parts of ISO 18393 Series: For testing other forms or applications of insulation materials, addressing different installation methods or environmental conditions.

  • CEN and National Standards: SIST EN ISO 18393-1:2024 is adopted by CEN member countries, ensuring harmonized practices across Europe and interoperability with national building regulations.
