SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method was developed for the determination of nitrogen trichloride in samples of carbon tetrachloride liquid taken from the compressor suction chiller bottoms of chlorine production plants and other places in the plants that may collect and concentrate nitrogen trichloride to levels that could explode. The test method was then modified to measure the lower levels of nitrogen trichloride observed in product liquid chlorine. This test method is sensitive enough to measure the levels of nitrogen trichloride observed in the normal production of liquid chlorine.
4.2 This test method for nitrogen trichloride will require the dilution (100:1) of highly concentrated in-process samples to bring them within the working range of the analysis.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method uses high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine nitrogen trichloride levels in liquid chlorine at the 0.1 μg/g (ppm) to 600 μg/g (ppm) range. Solvent samples from chlorine production facilities containing very high concentrations of nitrogen trichloride may be analyzed by dilution with methanol.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The coulometric technique is especially suited for determining low concentrations of water in organic liquids that would yield small titers by the Karl Fischer volumetric procedure. The precision and accuracy of the coulometric technique decreases for concentrations of water much greater than 2.0 % because of the difficulty in measuring the small size of sample required. The test method assumes 100 % efficiency of coulombs in iodine production. Provision is made for verifying this efficiency. (See Table 1 and Note 5.)
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of water from 0 % to 2.0 % mass in most liquid organic chemicals, with Karl Fischer reagent, using an automated coulometric titration procedure. Use of this test method is not applicable for liquefied gas products such as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), Butane, Propane, Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), etc.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Titration techniques using KF reagent are one of the most widely used for the determination of water.
4.2 Although the volumetric KF titration can determine low levels of water, it is generally accepted that coulometric KF titrations (see Test Method E1064) are more accurate for routine determination of very low levels of water. As a general rule, if samples routinely contain water concentrations of 500 mg/kg or less, the coulometric technique should be considered.
4.3 Applications can be subdivided into two sections: (1) organic and inorganic compounds, in which water may be determined directly, and (2) compounds, in which water cannot be determined directly, but in which interferences may be eliminated by suitable chemical reactions or modifications of the procedure. Further discussion of interferences is included in Section 5 and Appendix X2.
4.4 Water can be determined directly in the presence of the following types of compounds:

SCOPE
1.1 This test method is intended as a general guide for the application of the volumetric Karl Fischer (KF) titration for determining free water and water of hydration in most solid or liquid organic and inorganic compounds. This test method is designed for use with automatic titration systems capable of determining the KF titration end point potentiometrically; however, a manual titration method for determining the end point visually is included as Appendix X1. Samples that are gaseous at room temperature are not covered (see Appendix X4). This test method covers the use of pyridine-free KF reagents for determining water by the volumetric titration. Determination of water using KF coulometric titration is not discussed. By proper choice of the sample size, KF reagent concentration and apparatus, this test method is suitable for measurement of water over a wide concentration range, that is, parts per million to pure water.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 pH is, within the limits described in 1.1, an accurate measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration and thus is widely used for the characterization of aqueous solutions.
4.2 pH measurement is one of the main process control variables in the chemical industry and has a prominent place in pollution control.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method specifies the apparatus and procedures for the electrometric measurement of pH values of aqueous solutions with the glass electrode. It does not deal with the manner in which the solutions are prepared. pH measurements of good precision can be made in aqueous solutions containing high concentrations of electrolytes or water-soluble organic compounds, or both. It should be understood, however, that pH measurements in such solutions are only a semiquantitative indication of hydrogen ion concentration or activity. The measured pH will yield an accurate result for these quantities only when the composition of the medium matches approximately that of the standard reference solutions. In general, this test method will not give an accurate measure of hydrogen ion activity unless the pH lies between 2 and 12 and the concentration of neither electrolytes nor nonelectrolytes exceeds 0.1 mol/L (M).

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This method provides appearance of clear, transparent liquids. Many liquid organic products have a product specification requiring them to be clear and bright and free of visible particulate matter and of liquid phases other than the main liquid. Producers of these liquid organic products need a test method to confirm the quality of their products meets product specifications for appearance. Appearance is a manufacturing and sales specification test for ethylene and propylene glycol and polyol products and a loading specification test for methanol wall washes of marine vessels. This test method was originally designed for application to glycols and methanol wall washes of marine vessels, but may be applicable to other clear, transparent liquids. Individuals using this test method for other clear transparent liquids should assure themselves that the method is sufficient for use.
5.2 There are many factors that could affect the appearance during and after sampling of a liquid product. These factors may include transferring of the liquid into a different sample container, contamination by the sample container or contamination by ambient atmosphere. Sampling and evaluation procedures need to be followed to avoid undesirable effects and assure the appearance of the sample is typical for the liquid as manufactured.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes the visual assessment of the appearance of clear, transparent liquids for clarity and the presence of undesirable components (contamination) such as suspended matter, free water (or oil) and particulates when examined by transmitted light. Measurements requiring instrumentation are not included in this method. This test method was originally designed for application to glycols and methanol wall washes of marine vessels but may be applicable to other clear transparent liquids.
1.1.1 This test method can be used as a field test at storage temperatures or as a laboratory test at room temperatures.
1.1.2 This test method provides a visual appearance description of transparent liquids. It is a qualitative assessment only.
1.2 Review the current appropriate Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for detailed information concerning toxicity, first aid procedures, and safety precautions.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Organic as well as inorganic chlorine compounds can prove harmful to equipment and reactions in processes involving hydrocarbons.
5.2 Maximum chloride levels are often specified for process streams and for hydrocarbon products.
5.3 Organic chloride species are potentially damaging to refinery processes. Hydrochloric acid can be produced in hydrotreating or reforming reactors and this acid accumulates in condensing regions of the refinery.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of organic chloride in aromatic hydrocarbons, their derivatives, and related chemicals.
1.2 This test method is applicable to samples with chloride concentrations to 25 mg/kg. The limit of detection (LOD) is 0.2 mg/kg and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) is 0.7 mg/kg. With careful analytical technique or the measurement of replicates, or both, this method can be used to successfully analyze concentrations below the LOD.
Note 1: The maximum is the highest concentration from the interlaboratory study and the LOD and LOQ were calculated from Performance Testing Program (PTP) data. See Table 1.
1.3 This test method is preferred over Test Method D5194 for products, such as styrene, that are polymerized by the sodium biphenyl reagent.
1.4 In determining the conformance of the test results using this method to applicable specifications, results shall be rounded off in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.
1.5 Organic chloride values of samples containing inorganic chlorides will be biased high due to partial recovery of inorganic species during combustion. Interference from inorganic species can be reduced by water washing the sample before analysis. This does not apply to water soluble samples.
1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Knowledge of the UV transmittance of MEG is required to establish whether the product meets the requirements of its quality specifications.
4.2 Dissolved oxygen in organic solvents, such as MEG, forms complexes that shift the solvent absorption from the vacuum UV range into the measurable UV range (near 190 nm to 250 nm). MEG has a UV absorption peak at 180 nm. For MEG-oxygen complexes, this peak is shifted to a longer wavelength, thus increasing the absorbability at 220 nm.
4.2.1 However, this effect is not observed in water. There is no significant measurable effect due to dissolved oxygen in water that would require nitrogen sparging prior to using for collection of the reference spectrum.
4.2.2 Nitrogen sparging and re-measurement of suspect or borderline glycol samples at 220 nm can be used as a tool to rule out or confirm the presence of UV affecting contaminants other than oxygen.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers a procedure for the determination of the transmittance of monoethylene glycol (1,2-ethanediol; MEG) at wavelengths in the region 220 nm to 350 nm. The results provide a measure of the purity of the sample with respect to ultraviolet (UV) absorbing compounds.
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method is suitable for setting specifications on the materials referenced in 1.2 and for use as an internal quality control tool where isopropylbenzene is produced or is used in a manufacturing process. It may also be used in development or research work involving isopropylbenzene.
5.2 This test method is useful in determining the purity of isopropylbenzene with normal impurities present. If extremely high boiling or unusual impurities are present in the isopropylbenzene, this test method would not necessarily detect them and the purity calculation would be erroneous.
5.3 Cumene hydroperoxide, if present, will yield thermal decomposition products, primarily AP and DMPC as stated in 4.1, that will elute in the chromatogram thereby giving incorrect results unless they are excluded as indicated in 4.1. It is also possible to get erroneous results for trace alpha-methylstyrene present in isopropylbenzene if the inlet has become unduly contaminated with non-volatile foreign substances.
5.4 The nonaromatic hydrocarbons commonly present from the isopropylbenzene manufacturing process, particularly a non-zeolitic one, will interfere with the determination of xylenes (if present).
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the purity of isopropylbenzene (cumene) by gas chromatography. Calibration of the gas chromatography system is done by the external standard calibration technique.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 It has long been recognized that narrow melting range and high final melting point are good indications of high purity in crystalline organic compounds. Several ASTM test methods use these criteria to assay the purity of organic compounds (Note 1).
Note 1: Other ASTM test methods using melting (or freezing point) data to indicate sample purity are Test Methods D852 and D6875.
5.2 The relatively simple and rapid test prescribed in this test method shows the sample under test to be either more or less pure than the standard sample. For specification purposes, a minimum allowable purity can be assured by setting limits on the differences in final melting points and the melting ranges between the standard sample and the sample under test.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination, by a capillary tube method, of the initial melting point and the final melting point, which define the melting range, of samples of organic chemicals whose melting points without decomposition fall between 30 °C and 250 °C.
1.2 This test method is applicable only to crystalline materials that are sufficiently stable in storage to met the requirements of a satisfactory standard sample as defined in Section 7.
1.3 This test method is not directly applicable to opaque materials or to noncrystalline materials such as waxes, fats, and fatty acids.
1.4 Review the current Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for detailed information concerning toxicity, first aid procedures, handling, and safety precautions.
1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Hydroxyl is an important functional group, and knowledge of its content is required in many intermediate and end use applications. The test methods described herein are for the determination of primary and secondary hydroxyl groups and can be used for the assay of compounds containing them.
SCOPE
1.1 These test methods cover the determination of hydroxyl groups attached to primary and secondary carbon atoms in aliphatic and alicyclic compounds and phenols.
1.2 Three test methods are given as follows:
Sections
Test Method A (Pressure Bottle Method)
8 – 14
Test Method B (Reflux Method)
16 – 22
Test Method C (Perchloric Acid Catalyzed Method)
24 – 30
1.2.1 Test Method A is recommended for general use. Test Method B is included to give a standard procedure for the method that has been used widely. Test Method C is recommended when the results are required in a minimum period of time or where ambient temperature for the reaction is desired.
1.2.2 The results obtained using Test Methods A and B will be essentially the same, but the results obtained using Test Method C will be higher (up to approximately 4 % relative) than those obtained using the other two methods.
1.2.3 Statements on precision are included with each test method. The precision of Test Methods A and C is consistent over a wide range of hydroxyl content (tested over hydroxyl number range of 250 to 1600), whereas Test Method B is less precise at the higher hydroxyl content level than it is at the lower hydroxyl content level. In general, Test Method A is approximately two-fold as precise as Test Method C. Test Method B has approximately the same precision as Test Method C at the lower hydroxyl content level but poorer precision at the higher hydroxyl content level.
1.2.4 The interferences are essentially the same for the three methods. Some compounds can be analyzed using Test Methods A or B but not using Test Method C because of interfering reactions of the strong acid catalyst with the compound being analyzed or the acetate product formed in the determination. However, because of its increased reactivity, Test Method C is applicable for determination of some compounds, particularly sterically hindered secondary alcohols, which react too slowly or not at all in Test Methods A and B.
Note 1: Other methods for determination of hydroxyl groups are given in Test Methods D1957, D2195, E326, E335, and E567.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.4 In determining the conformance of the test results using this method to applicable specifications, results shall be rounded in accordance with the rounding off methods of Practice E29.
1.5 Review the current appropriate Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for detailed information concerning toxicity, first aid procedures, and safety precautions.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific hazards statements are given in Section 7.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The total fluorine, chlorine, and sulfur contained in aromatic hydrocarbon matrices can contribute to emissions, be harmful to many catalytic chemical processes, and lead to corrosion. This test method can be used to determine total sulfur and halogens in aromatic hydrocarbons and their mixtures. The results can be used for compliance determinations when acceptable to a regulatory authority using performance based criteria.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the individual determination of total fluorine, chlorine, and sulfur in aromatic hydrocarbons and their mixtures. Samples containing 0.10 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg of each element can be analyzed.
1.2 This method can be applied to sample concentrations outside the range of the scope by dilution of the sample in an appropriate solvent to bring the total concentrations of fluorine, chlorine, and sulfur within the range covered by the test method. However, it is the responsibility of the analyst to verify the solubility of the sample in the solvent and that the diluted sample results conform to the precision and accuracy of the method.
1.2.1 Special considerations must be made in order to attain detection limits below 1.0 mg/kg in a sample. The instrument must be clean and properly maintained to address potential sources of contamination, or carryover, or both. Multiple sequential injections shall be completed until a stable background is attained. A stable background is considered to be achieved when the analysis of a minimum of three consecutive system blanks have area counts equal to or less than 5 % RSD for the anions of interest.
1.3 In determining the conformance of the test results using this method to applicable specifications, results shall be rounded off in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.
1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. See Section 9.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 This test method is suitable for use in calculating weights and volumes of the products outlined in Section 1. The information presented in this method can be used for determining quantities of the above-stated aromatic hydrocarbons in tanks, shipping containers, etc.
SCOPE
1.1 This standard is for use in calculating the weight and volume of benzene, toluene, mixed xylenes, styrene, ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, para-xylene, cumene, ethylbenzene, 148.9 to 176.7 °C and 176.7 to 204.4 °C aromatic hydrocarbons, and cyclohexane. A method is given for calculating the volume at a given temperature from an observed volume at an observed temperature, t °C. Table 1 lists the density in Vacuo at 15 °F and 20 °C for chemicals used to develop the relationship. Densities (or weights) “in vacuo” represent the true density (or weight) if measured in a vacuum without the buoyancy effect of air acting on the liquid. It is representative of the actual amount of product present. Densities (or weights) “in air” represent what would be measured on a scale. The difference is on the order of 0.13 %. Modern densitometers measure density in vacuo and the ASTM recommends the use of in vacuo densities (or weights).
