CEN/TC 193/WG 3 - Adhesives for paper and board, packaging and disposable sanitary products
Development of standard methods to evaluate adhesives for the paper industry.
Adhesives for paper and board, packaging and disposable sanitary products
Development of standard methods to evaluate adhesives for the paper industry.
General Information
This European Standard specifies a test method to determine the foam formation, or air entrainment during rapid stirring of aqueous adhesives with a maximum viscosity of 10 000 MPa·s at room temperature determined in accordance with EN 12092.

This European Standard specifies a method to determine whether a film of adhesive of given dimensions will craze, crack or fracture at a specified temperature.
Alternatively, the temperature at which the film will craze, crack or fracture can be determined.
The method described can be used as a quality control test, or to compare the flexibility of adhesives at low temperatures.

This standard describes a test method in which a constant force is applied in the shear mode to an adhesive bond. The time for bond failure to occur at constant temperature is recorded or, alternatively, with increasing temperature, the temperature at which failure occurs. Should the substrate fail under the applied force, the test must be repeated using a lower force. No account is taken of the mechanical properties of the adhesive or adherend that may affect the validity or usefulness of the test.

This European Standard specifies a method of test for determination of tensile strength and elongation of dry films of hot melt or dispersion adhesives, when these are stretched to breakage at a constant pulling speed.

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of blocking behaviour of thermoplastic or hygroscopic layers or coatings of potentially adhesive surfaces. Some potentially adhesive surfaces are both thermoplastic andhygroscopic. The method described provides a means for determining, on the same surface, both thermoplastic and hygroscopic blocking.

This European Standard specifies a test method for the determination of "Loop Tack" for coated pressure sensitive adhesives.

This European Standard specifies a method for the determining the dispersability of dry adhesive in a dispersing medium. The test can be applied to all types of adhesives covered by this series of standards and include soluble, dispersion and hot melt systems. The test is intended primarily as a comparative test for investigating the dispersability performance of different adhesives and should not be used to provide accurate data regarding the water resistance of the adhesives in their finished bonded state.

The setting of an adhesive is a complex process, during which the adhesive develops its cohesive strength. It takes place in several phases, which are affected by numerous factors e.g. environmental conditions, substrates, coating weight, etc. Terms commonly used, related to the setting process are e.g. open time (correctly termed maximum open time), wet tack, hot tack, green tack, closed time, setting time. This European standard defines these terms in detail and describes the various aspects of the setting procedures used to assess the setting process.
