CEN/TC 62/WG 1 - EN-Convectors
Standardization of independent gas-fired closed fronted space heaters.
EN-Convectors
Standardization of independent gas-fired closed fronted space heaters.
General Information
This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for the construction, safety, marking and rational use of energy of open fronted gas-fired independent space heaters with and without a fan to assist with the transportation of flue gases, hereafter referred to as appliances. Although the fan may be mounted outdoors, this standard only covers appliances where the body of the appliance is indoors.
This standard applies to types B11AS, B11BS, B14AS, and B14BS (commonly referred to in this standard as type B1 appliances) open fronted gas-fired independent space heating appliances:
- that incorporate an atmospheric burner;
- that are connected directly to an open flue (see Figure 1), or to a device to evacuate the products of combustion (open-flued appliances);
- that have a nominal heat input not exceeding 20 kW (based on the net calorific value);
- that are delivered with the gas-carrying components, burner(s), combustion chamber and heat exchanger fully assembled.
It does not apply to:
- closed-fronted appliances;
- decorative fuel effect appliances as specified in EN 509;
- catalytic combustion appliances;
- ducted-air appliances;
- appliances installed by means of a closure plate (see 3.3.3.3).

This document specifies, for the purpose of type examination, the requirements and test methods for construction, safety, marking and rational use of energy of 2nd and 3rd family gas-fired domestic flueless space heating appliances having a nominal input not exceeding 6 kW (based on net calorific value).
It covers the following Type AAS fixed flueless heaters:
NOTE These are type A appliances fitted with an atmosphere sensing device, with or without a fan.
a) heaters with or without a catalytic converter;
b) Category 1 appliances burning gases of the second family;
c) Category 2 appliances burning gases of the second and third families.
It does not cover
i. Mobile heaters.
ii. Category 1 appliances burning gases of the third family.
iii. Portable flueless heaters.
iv. Diffusive catalytic combustion heaters.
There are no specific thermal efficiency requirements appropriate to these types of appliance as:
All the heat produced by the combustion process is released into the space to be heated.
The requirements with regard to the combustion performance, which is a safety matter, ensure the effective burning of the fuel gas.
This standard is only applicable to appliances which are to be type tested. Matters related to quality assurance systems, tests during production and to certificates of conformity of auxiliary devices are not dealt with by this standard.

This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for the construction, safety, marking and rational use of energy of gas-fired insets for heating more than one room that are intended to be built into a casing made from brickwork or similar material.
This European Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 613:2000.
This European Standard is applicable to type B11BS insets burning gas:
that incorporate an atmospheric burner;
that are installed directly to an open flue or to a device to evacuate the products of combustion;
that have a nominal heat input not exceeding 20 kW (based on the net calorific value).
In addition, this European Standard is also applicable to insets for heating more than one room which have a live fuel effect.
This European Standard is not applicable to:
open fronted appliances as specified in EN 13278;
decorative fuel effect appliances as specified in EN 509;
convection heating appliances as specified in EN 613;
catalytic combustion appliances;
appliances in which the supply of combustion air and/or evacuation of products of combustion is achieved by mechanical means as specified in EN 1266;
warm air heaters (which are subject of CEN/TC 180).
This European Standard is only applicable to insets which are intended to be type tested.

This European standard specifies the requirements and test methods for construction, safety, fitness for purpose, rational use of energy, classification and marking of gas-fired convection heating appliances that are fitted with fan-assisted atmospheric burners, and fully pre-mixed burners. This European standard applies to independent convection heaters, burning gas having a fan to assist the transportation of combustion air and/or flue gases, hereafter referred to as 'appliances'.
