CEN/TC 154/SC 4 - Hydraulic bound and unbound aggregates

This European Standard specifies the properties of aggregates obtained by processing natural or manufactured or recycled materials for hydraulically bound and unbound materials for civil engineering work and road construction.
It provides for the evaluation of conformity of the products to this European Standard.
NOTE 1      Aggregates used in construction should comply with all the requirements of this European Standard. As well as familiar and traditional natural and manufactured aggregates Mandate M/125 "Aggregates" included recycled aggregates and some materials from new or unfamiliar sources. Recycled aggregates are included in the standards and new test methods for them are at an advanced stage of preparation. For unfamiliar materials from secondary sources, however, the work on standardisation has only started recently and more time is needed to define clearly the origins and characteristics of these materials. In the meantime such unfamiliar materials when placed on the market as aggregates must comply fully with this standard and national regulations for dangerous substances (see Annex ZA of the standard) depending upon their intended use. Additional characteristics and requirements may be specified on a case by case basis depending upon experience of use of the product, and defined in specific contractual documents.
NOTE 2   Properties for lightweight aggregates are specified in EN 13055-2.

This European Standard specifies requirements for natural crushed unbound aggregates for use in construction of railway track. For the purposes of this standard the aggregate is referred to as railway ballast. The necessity for testing for all properties specified in this standard is limited, depending upon the end use of the railway ballast.

This European Standard specifies the properties of aggregates obtained by processing natural, manufactured or recycled materials and mixtures of these materials for use as armourstone.
It provides for the evaluation of conformity of the products to this European Standard.
NOTE 1   The requirements in this European Standard are based upon experience with armourstone types with an established pattern of use. Care should be taken when considering the use of armourstone from sources with no such pattern of use, e.g., recycled armourstone and armourstone arising from certain industrial by-products. Such armourstone, which should comply with all the requirements of this European Standard, could have other characteristics not included in Mandate M 125 that do not apply to the generality of armourstone types with an established pattern of use and when required, provisions valid at the place of use can be used to assess their suitability.
NOTE 2   Finer aggregates than specified in this European Standard are used in hydraulic structures. For such aggregates European Standards for other end uses of aggregates should be applied.

This document specifies the characteristics of aggregates and filler aggregates obtained by processing natural, manufactured or recycled materials and mixtures of these aggregates for use in unbound and hydraulically bound materials for civil engineering works and road constructions.
It covers aggregates having an oven-dried particle density greater than 2,00 Mg/m3. It also covers recycled and manufactured aggregates with particle densities greater than 1,50 Mg/m3.
NOTE 1   Assessment of the density of recycled aggregates is typically carried out on coarse fractions.
NOTE 2   Lightweight aggregates are specified in EN 13055.
NOTE 3   Unbound mixtures for road constructions are specified in EN 13285. EN 13285 does call up EN 13242.
The use of aggregates as soil is not covered by this standard.
NOTE 4   Due to huge variation of geological and pedological conditions in Europe, precise definition of soil can be found in the documents related to the application in the place of use.
Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) of aggregates to this document are given in EN 16236.
Aggregates used in construction are meant to comply with all the relevant European standards for aggregates. These standards include comprehensive and specific requirements for natural aggregates, manufactured and recycled aggregates, dealing with, for example, the stability of certain basalts, the expansion of certain slags and the constituents of recycled aggregates.

This European Standard specifies test methods for natural, artificial and recycled aggregates for use as armourstone.

This European Standard specifies the properties of aggregates and filler aggregates obtained by processing natural, manufactured or recycled materials and mixtures of these aggregates for use in hydraulically bound and unbound materials for civil engineering works and road constructions.
It covers aggregates having an oven dried particle density greater than 2,0 Mg/m3 (2000Kg/m3). It also covers recycled aggregates with particle densities greater than 1,50 Mg/m3 (1 500 kg/m3) with appropriate caveats and recycled fine aggregate with appropriate caveats.
A list of the source materials that have been considered and indicating those which are within the scope of this standard is given in Annex A (normative).
Requirements for the evaluation of conformity of the products to this European Standard are given in EN 16236.
It incorporates a general requirement that aggregates will not release any dangerous substances in excess of the maximum permitted levels specified in a relevant European Standard for the material or permitted in the national regulations of the member state of destination.
The tables in this standard include categories which are common across the four main aggregate standards: EN 12620, EN 13043, EN 13139 and EN 13242. Not all of these categories are appropriate for aggregates for use in hydraulically bound and unbound materials for civil engineering works and road constructions. Categories, notes, comments etc, which are shown grey shaded should not be used for aggregates for use in hydraulically bound and unbound materials for civil engineering works and road constructions.
Aggregates used in construction should comply with all the requirements of the relevant European Standards for aggregates. These standards include comprehensive and specific requirements for natural aggregates, iron and steel making slag and recycled aggregates, dealing with, for example, the stability of certain basalts, the expansion of certain slags and the constitution of recycled aggregates.
For materials from some other secondary sources, however, work is ongoing and the requirements are incomplete. In the meantime, such materials, when placed on the market as aggregates, should conform fully to this standard but may also be required to conform to specific relevant additional requirements at the place of use. Additional characteristics and requirements may be specified on a case by case basis depending upon experience of use of the product, and defined in specific contractual documents.
NOTE 1   Requirements for lightweight aggregates are specified in EN 13055.
Requirements for the declaration of the potential of aggregates to release regulated dangerous substances are currently under development. Until such time as these are finalised, attention should be paid to requirements at the place of use.
NOTE 2   Requirements for hydraulically bound and unbound materials for civil engineering works are specified in EN 13285 and are not therefore covered in this standard. EN 13285 does however call up the general requirements of EN 13242 for the aggregates.
