M/294 - Household gas ovens
Mandate to CEN/CENELEC for the elaboration and adoption of measurement standards for household gas ovens
Mandate M/294 requests CEN and CENELEC to develop and adopt standardized measurement methods for household gas ovens. The objective is to ensure consistent and reliable testing procedures for these appliances across the European market. This standardisation effort aims to support regulatory requirements, improve energy efficiency assessments, and enhance consumer information. The mandate was considered for approval under resolution CEN/BT C310/1999.
Purpose
This mandate aims to direct the European standardisation organisations CEN and CENELEC to develop and adopt measurement standards specifically for household gas ovens. The goal is to establish harmonised methods and criteria that ensure consistency, safety, and performance evaluation across the EU market.
Standardisation request
CEN and CENELEC are requested to elaborate and formalise standards concerning the measurement of household gas ovens. This involves defining appropriate procedures, parameters, and metrics to assess the ovens’ characteristics reliably and uniformly.
Expected deliverables
- Development of standards detailing measurement methods for household gas ovens.
- Adoption of these standards through the formal CEN and CENELEC standardisation process.
- Published standards that can be referenced by manufacturers, regulators, and market surveillance authorities to ensure compliance and facilitate market access.
Context
Household gas ovens are common domestic appliances requiring clear standards to guarantee product safety, energy efficiency, and performance. Standardised measurement methods facilitate regulatory compliance and consumer protection. This mandate (reference M/294) was approved by resolution CEN/BT C310/1999, indicating formal endorsement for initiating the standardisation work within the EU framework.
This mandate covers the development and adoption of measurement standards specifically for household gas ovens, focusing on ensuring accurate and consistent measurement methods within this product sector.
General Information
EN 15181:2007+A1specifies the method of test for determining the gas energy consumption in gas-fired domestic ovens when they are being used in one or more of the oven cooking modes defined in 3. 1. It applies to the gas-fired domestic ovens which are capable of utilizing gases of group H or group E !or third family gases", possibly after conversion according to instructions for use. This European Standard applies to these gas-fired domestic ovens, whether they are separate appliances or component parts of domestic cooking appliances. This European Standard also applies to domestic appliances that can utilize gas and/or electrical energy to provide heat for cooking when the ovens are utilizing gas energy to provide heat for cooking, but not when electric energy is used to provide any or all of the heat for cooking in the oven.It is not applicable to:- microwave combination ovens;- small cavities ovens (3.2);- oven cavities not provided with devices to detect and control the temperature for the preparation of food;- cooking modes others than defined in 3.1.1 and 3.1.2;- ovens connected to a chimney in which the gas energy for cooking provides, by design, also space and/or water heating;!Deleted text"This European Standard is concerned neither with safety nor with overall performance requirements.

A European Standardization Mandate is a formal request from the European Commission to the European Standardization Organizations (CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI) to develop European standards (ENs) in support of EU legislation and policies. Mandates are issued under Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012 and help ensure that products and services meet the essential requirements set out in EU directives and regulations.
M/294 is a European Standardization Mandate titled "Mandate to CEN/CENELEC for the elaboration and adoption of measurement standards for household gas ovens". Mandate to CEN/CENELEC for the elaboration and adoption of measurement standards for household gas ovens There are 10 standards developed under this mandate.
Standards developed in response to a mandate and cited in the Official Journal of the European Union become "harmonized standards". Products manufactured in compliance with harmonized standards benefit from a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements of the corresponding EU directive or regulation, facilitating CE marking and market access across the European Economic Area.
