Standard Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Modified Bituminous Sheet Material

ABSTRACT
These test methods cover procedures for sampling and testing prefabricated, reinforced, polymer-modified bituminous sheet materials designed for single- or multiple-ply application in roofing and waterproofing membranes. From each shipment or fraction thereof, select at random a number of rolls equal to one half the cube root of the total number of rolls in the lot. If the calculated number is fractional, express it as the next highest whole number. The load strain (tensile elongation and strain energy) properties shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed. The tensile tear strength, moisture content, and water absorption of polymer-modified bituminous sheets shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed. The dimensional stability, low-temperature flexibility, heat conditioning, and accelerated weathering of the polymer-modified bituminous sheets shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed. The granule embedment, compound stability, coating thickness, low temperature unrolling, and precision and bias of the polymer-modified bituminous sheet materials shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed.
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 These test methods are used for sampling and testing modified bitumen sheet materials. Property requirements, determined by these test methods, are found in the following product standards: Specifications D6162, D6163, D6164, D6222, D6223, D6298, and D6509.
SCOPE
1.1 These test methods cover procedures for sampling and testing prefabricated, reinforced, polymer-modified bituminous sheet materials designed for single- or multiple-ply application in roofing and waterproofing membranes. These products may use various surfacing materials on one side.  
1.2 These test methods cover a number of different products. Not all tests are required for every product. Only those called out in the Product Standard are required.

Standard Test Method for Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance of a Liquid-Applied Waterproofing Membrane

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method is used as a screening tool to determine the hydrostatic pressure to which a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane may be subjected without failing when stretched over a crack in the substrate. This test method discriminates between a membrane that is very resistant to hydrostatic pressure and one that is not. Because of the variability inherent in this test method, it is not recommended that this test method be used to set a numerical standard for hydrostatic pressure resistance. No prediction of durability at lower hydrostatic pressures can be made when using the results of this test method.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes a laboratory procedure for determining the resistance of a waterproofing membrane to hydrostatic pressure.  
1.2 The committee with jurisdiction over this standard is not aware of any comparable standards published by other organizations.

Standard Guide for Application of Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 Asphalt-based, solvent-type, fibered or nonfibered, aluminum-pigmented roof coatings are used as a protective coating for solar reflection to prolong the life of roofing materials or where decorative qualities are desired.  
3.2 Suitable application of aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings is an important factor in achieving a successful long-term coating. Suitable application is, in part, dependent upon appropriate specifications to guide the work. This guide can be useful in facilitating development of an appropriate specification for surface preparation and application of the roof coating.  
3.3 Designers/specifiers of coatings may use this guide in preparing the application portion of their specification. Contractors working directly for the building owner may also use this guide.  
3.4 This guide is not all-inclusive. Manufacturer's application instructions should be consulted and geographical “area practices” considered. Consult membrane manufacturer and coating manufacturer for acceptability of procedures and products.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers the application methods for Specification D2824/D2824M Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings, Nonfibered, and Fibered without Asbestos, for application on asphalt built-up roof membranes, modified bitumen roof membranes, bituminous base flashings, concrete surfaces, metal surfaces, emulsion coatings, and solvent-based coatings. This guide does not apply to the selection of a specific aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coating type for use on specific projects. The fibered version of these coatings excludes the use of asbestos fibers.

Standard Test Method for Failure End Point in Accelerated and Outdoor Weathering of Bituminous Materials

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The extent of cracking or pitting of bituminous films is a measure of the extent of deterioration due to weathering. Failure due to cracking is more accurately determined electrically than visually.  
4.2 Failure determined by this test method will depend not only on the characteristics of the bituminous material and the extent of weathering, but also on the film thickness, and the amount and type of mineral filler present.  
4.3 Tests on a similar material of known weathering characteristics (a control) exposed at the same time as the test material is strongly recommended as a check on the validity of the test results.
SCOPE

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method measures the tendency for oil components to separate spontaneously from asphalt. The separation of oil components can cause staining in asphalt roofing products and adjacent materials in storage and use.  
4.2 The stain index is related to the thermal stability of the asphalt. Higher stain index values indicate lower stability and greater tendency for staining.  
4.3 Use this procedure to determine the staining tendency of asphalt and to compare the results against a material for which the staining tendency is known.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the staining tendency of asphalt and the assignment of a stain index proportional to the extent of staining observed.  
1.2 This test method is applicable to asphalts having ring-and-ball softening points of 85 °C [185 °F] or greater.  
Note 1: This test method may be modified for use with other bituminous materials with softening points less than 85 °C [185 °F] by using a different temperature than specified in Section 7 by agreement of the interested parties. The report of results from such a test may cite this method but must clearly state the temperature employed in the exception and acknowledge that the interpretation of results in Section 9 and the precision and bias stated in Section 10 may not apply.
