Standard Specification for Magnesium-Alloy Sand Castings

ABSTRACT
This specification covers magnesium-alloy sand castings. The castings shall conform to the chemical composition limits specified. The castings may be subjected to such heat treatment as deemed necessary to produce material that will conform to the requirements specified. Heat treatment shall be performed on the whole casting and never on a portion. Foundry control shall consist of examination of the castings by radiographic or other approved methods for determining internal discontinuities until the gating, pouring, and other foundry practices have been established to produce castings meeting the quality standards. The tension test specimens representing the castings shall conform to the requirements.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Tension tests provide information on the strength and ductility of materials under uniaxial tensile stresses. This information may be useful in comparisons of materials, alloy development, quality control, and design under certain circumstances.

Exceptions to the provisions of these test methods may need to be made in individual specifications or test methods for a particular material.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers magnesium-alloy investment castings designated as AM100A, AZ81A, AZ91C, AZ91E, AZ92A, EQ21A, EZ33A, K1A, QE22A, ZE41A, and ZK61A. Sufficient stock shall be allowed for shrinkage and, where required, for finishing; but castings of excessive weight shall not be furnished. The castings shall conform to the chemical composition requirements prescribed for magnesium, aluminum, manganese, zinc, zirconium, rare earth elements, copper, nickel, silicon, iron, and other impurities, as determined by chemical analysis, and shall meet the specified requirements for the tensile properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The castings shall be of uniform quality and condition, free from cracks and other injurious defects, shall be cleaned before inspection by blasting or other approved process, and shall not be repaired by welding, impregnation, peening, or other method unless it is required.

1.2 Alloy designations are in accordance with Practice E527; temper designations are in accordance with Practice B296.

Standard Practice for Codification of Unalloyed Magnesium and Magnesium-Alloys, Cast and Wrought

ABSTRACT
This practice provides a system for the codification of unalloyed magnesium and magnesium alloys in the cast and wrought forms. Code designations shall be based on their chemical composition limits. For alloys, designations shall consist of not more than two letters representing the alloying elements specified in the greatest amount, followed by the respective percentages and a serial letter. The letters that represent the alloying elements are: A for aluminum; C for copper; E for rare earths; J for strontium; K for zirconium; L for lithium; M for manganese; Q for silver; S for silicon; T for tin; V for gadolinium; W for yttrium; and Z for zinc. For unalloyed metals, designations shall consist of the specified minimum purity, followed by a serial letter. For both cases, the full name of the base metal precedes the designation, but is omitted for brevity when the base metal being referred to is obvious.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice provides a system for designating unalloyed magnesium and magnesium-alloys that have been used commercially since 1952, and thus is intended to be the registration source for unalloyed magnesium and magnesium-alloys. A record of designations along with the established compositions is given in Table 2.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers magnesium alloy permanent mold casting. The castings may be subjected to the heat treatment necessary to produce material that will conform to the requirements specified. Heat treatment shall be performed on the whole of a casting, never on a part only, and shall be applied in a manner that will produce the utmost uniformity. The castings shall be of uniform quality and condition, free of cracks or other injurious defects, and shall be well cleaned by sand blasting or any other approved process before inspection. The material shall conform to the chemical composition limits prescribed. Any suitable method of chemical analysis may be used. Unless otherwise specified, heat treatment for the applicable tempers designated shall be in accordance with practice B 661 or with Military Specification MIL-M-6857. The tension test specimens representing the castings shall conform to the requirements specified. At least one tension test specimen shall be cast from each melt of 2000 lb (907 kg) or fraction thereof to represent the castings poured from the same melt. The tension tests shall be made in accordance with test methods B 557.

Standard Specification for Magnesium-Alloy Forgings

ABSTRACT
This specification covers UNS M11311, M11610, M11800, or M16600 magnesium alloy forgings. The conformance of each material to the required chemical composition can be determined using any suitable method of chemical analysis. Samples for chemical analysis should be taken when the ingots are poured or from the finished or semi-finished products by drilling, sawing, milling, turning, or clipping. The variations in testing speed do not seriously affect the obtained tensile property values. However, care must be exercised so that the testing speed does not exceed the ability of the equipment to function satisfactorily. Unless specified, forgings should be chrome pickled before shipment.
