Overview

ASTM B624-07(2017): Standard Specification for High-Strength, High-Conductivity Copper-Alloy Wire for Electronic Application sets out requirements for round copper-alloy wire used specifically in electronic hookup applications. This ASTM standard ensures that wire products possess both high tensile strength and excellent electrical conductivity, making them well-suited for demanding electronic environments. The specified wire diameters range from 0.00099 to 0.0720 inches (0.025 to 1.829 mm), with minimum tensile strength and conductivity values designed to ensure optimal performance in electronic applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Dimensional Range
    • Applies to copper-alloy wire 0.00099 to 0.0720 in. (0.025 to 1.829 mm) in diameter
    • Intended for use as electronic hookup wire
  • Mechanical Requirements
    • Minimum tensile strength of 60 ksi (414 MPa)
    • Specific elongation requirements to ensure ductility
    • Strength and elongation requirements outlined in tabulated format for each diameter
  • Electrical Properties
    • Electrical conductivity at 20°C must be at least 85% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard)
    • Maximum electrical resistance stipulated for each size
  • Finish and Quality
    • Wire must be smooth, bright, clean, and free from defects such as laps, slivers, seams, and scratches
    • Joints needed for processing must not compromise mechanical or electrical properties
  • Testing and Inspection
    • Tensile and elongation testing as per standard methods (e.g., ASTM E8)
    • Electrical resistance measured following recognized protocols (e.g., ASTM B193)
    • Sampling for conformance and defect limits defined for production lots
  • Packaging and Marking
    • Packaging and package labeling agreed between manufacturer and purchaser
    • Adequate protection required for shipping and handling

Applications

This standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of copper-alloy wire in electronic applications. The wires specified by ASTM B624-07(2017) are widely used in:

  • Electronic Hookup Wire: Core use in circuit boards, electrical panels, and custom electronic assemblies where high conductivity and tensile strength are critical for both signal transmission and reliability.
  • High-Performance Connectors and Terminals: Where mechanical stress, vibration, or corrosive environments demand superior wire integrity.
  • Telecommunications Equipment: Internal wiring requiring consistent conductivity and stable mechanical performance.
  • Military and Aerospace Electronics: Approved for use by U.S. Department of Defense - reliability and quality documented for mission-critical applications.

By conforming to this standard, organizations ensure their wire products meet rigorous requirements for electronic quality, consistency, and safety.
