Standard Specification for Zinc Alloys in Ingot Form for Spin Casting

ABSTRACT
This specification covers four zinc alloys in ingot form, namely: Spin Casting Alloy SC-A, Spin Casting Alloy SC-B, Spin Casting Alloy SC-C, and ZA-73, for remelting for the manufacture of spin castings. The alloys may be made by any approved process, shall be of uniform quality, and shall be free from dross or other harmful contamination. The ingots shall conform to the chemical composition limits prescribed for aluminum, magnesium, copper, iron, lead, cadmium, tin, nickel, and zinc. Chemical analysis requirements for determination and for verification (if needed) of chemical composition are detailed.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers zinc alloys in ingot form for remelting for the manufacture of Spin Castings as specified and designated, as shown in Table 1. Seven alloy compositions are specified, designated as follows:

Overview

The ASTM B952/B952M-19(2024) Standard Specification for Zinc Alloys in Ingot Form for Spin Casting defines material and quality requirements for zinc alloys used to produce spin castings. Developed by ASTM International, this standard provides essential guidelines for seven alloy types-Spin Casting Alloys SC-A, SC-B, SC-C, SC-D, SC-E, SC-F, and ZA-73-supplied in ingot form and intended for remelting. By ensuring strict chemical composition and traceability, the standard supports consistency, safety, and optimal performance in spin casting operations across multiple industries.

Key Topics

  • Alloy Coverage: Specifies requirements for seven zinc alloy compositions used in spin casting, including their chemical composition and unique color code identifications.
  • Material Quality: Mandates that ingots be uniform in quality, free from dross, and without harmful contaminants, supporting reliable spin casting outcomes.
  • Chemical Composition: Details composition limits for key elements such as aluminum, magnesium, copper, iron, lead, cadmium, tin, nickel, and zinc, ensuring alloy conformity for industrial use.
  • Testing and Verification: Prescribes analytical methods such as ASTM E536, ISO 3815-1, and ISO 3815-2 for determining chemical composition, allowing for both determination and verification.
  • Order and Packaging Requirements: Outlines required documentation, packaging specifications, and product marking guidelines to ensure proper identification and traceability.
  • Safety and Compliance: Highlights user responsibility regarding safety, health, and environmental standards, urging compliance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and regulatory requirements.

Applications

The ASTM B952/B952M-19(2024) standard is critical for industries relying on high-quality zinc alloys for spin casting, such as:

  • Automotive and Transportation: For producing gears, bushings, and decorative parts requiring precise detail and durability.
  • Consumer Goods: Common in manufacturing hardware, jewelry, promotional items, and toys that benefit from effortless casting and intricate shapes.
  • Prototyping and Model Making: Ideal for creating detailed prototypes and short-run production components with rubber, polymer, or silicon molds.
  • Electrical and Electronics: Used for efficient casting of housings, connectors, and specialty components.
  • Industrial and Mechanical Components: Enables production of specialized parts with tight tolerances and repeatable properties through centrifugal casting techniques.

By defining stringent quality and material specifications, this standard helps producers and users of zinc alloy ingots ensure consistent performance, compliance, and end-product reliability in demanding production environments.

Related Standards

For comprehensive zinc alloy casting practices and industry consistency, the following ASTM and ISO standards are referenced or commonly used alongside ASTM B952/B952M-19(2024):

  • ASTM B240 – Specification for Zinc and Zinc-Aluminum (ZA) Alloys in Ingot Form for Foundry and Die Castings
