This practice establishes the standard procedures for ranking the measured slip resistance data of footwear sole, heel, and other related materials on various walkway surfaces.

WITHDRAWN RATIONALE
This practice covers the ranking of slip resistance of footwear sole, heel, or related materials on various walkway surfaces.
Formerly under the jurisdiction of Committee F13 on Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear, this practice was withdrawn in January 2018 in accordance with section 10.6.3 of the Regulations Governing ASTM Technical Committees, which requires that standards shall be updated by the end of the eighth year since the last approval date.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This non-proprietary laboratory test method allows for the reproducible testing of whole footwear and footwear-related soling materials for evaluating relative slip performance. Other ASTM test methods generally employ a standardized test foot primarily for evaluation of flooring materials.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method2 determines the dynamic coefficient of friction between footwear and floorings under reproducible laboratory conditions for evaluating relative slip performance. The method is applicable to all types of footwear, outsole units, heel top lifts and sheet soling materials, also to most types of floorings, including matting and stair nosing, and surface contaminants on the flooring surface, including but not limited to liquid water, ice, oil and grease. The method may also be applied to surfaces such as block pavers, turf and gravel.  
1.2 Special purpose footwear or fittings containing spikes, metal studs or similar may be tested on appropriate surfaces but the method does not fully take account of the risk of tripping due to footwear/ground interlock.

Standard Test Method for Whole Boot Breathability (MVTR)

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The materials and construction methods used in the manufacture of footwear play a significant role in the “breathability” of the footwear. This test method provides a means to measure moisture vapor permeability, expressed as MVTR, which is one aspect of comfort of the footwear.
SCOPE
1.1 The whole boot breathability test method is designed to indicate the Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) through the boot upper by means of a difference in temperature and moisture vapor concentration between the interior of the boot and the exterior environment. This method is intended for a size 10 R U.S. (Regular width) boot that is at least 6 in. [15.2 cm] tall above the insole.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 This test method is intended to estimate the water resistance of shoe upper leather. The flex imparted to the leather is similar to the flex given the vamp of the shoe in actual wear.
Note 1: There is an indication that this test method cannot be used interchangeably for specification purposes with Test Method D2098.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the dynamic water resistance of shoe upper leather by the Maeser water penetration tester. It is applicable to all types of shoe upper leather. Certain waterproof processes can cause contamination of the stainless steel balls. When this happens, visual inspection is recommended. This test method does not apply to wet blue.  
1.2 Initial water penetration and water absorption can be measured by this test method.

This specification covers the standard physical property requirements and test methods for urethane microcellular materials intended for shoe soling applications. Materials shall be subjected to physical tests and shall conform to the requirements for physical properties such as density, tensile strength, ultimate elongation, tear, hardness, cut-growth resistance, and taper abrasion or wear index.

1.1 This specification covers microcellular polyurethane materials for shoe soling applications. It provides physical property requirements and identifies test methods for determining those specific properties.

Standard Practice for Calibration of the James Static Coefficient of Friction Machine

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This practice is used to calibrate the James Machine for determination of static coefficient of friction of polish surfaces in accordance with Test Method D2047. Over considerable time and repeated use the James Machine may tend to mechanical misalignment, giving self-evident, anomalous readings. The periodic accumulation and comparison of data generated by this practice provides an indication of when the machine is no longer within the calibration limits and can no longer be expected to provide accurate and reliable data.  
5.2 Semi-automated James machines may perform an internal calibration/alignment test. These automated tests should be routinely run per the manufacturer's recommendation. If the repeatability tests of this practice indicate that the machine is out of calibration, the manufacturer should be contacted and their suggestions followed. Unqualified disassembly, modification, or adjustment may void the instrument warranty of semi-automated James Machines.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice covers the testing of the James Machine for repeatability of static coefficient of friction, relative to a standard reference interface consisting of the working surfaces of Borco2 board and standard leather shoe sole material, or a control polish film and standard leather shoe material. The practice provides basis data on the stability of the James Machine to ensure accurate static coefficient of friction determinations over time and repeated use and for determining if the James Machine is mechanically calibrated and properly aligned.  
1.2 This practice is written specifically for James Machines with manual or motorized test table transport. Variations of this practice for the calibration of versions of James Machines which are semi-automated are obvious. Calibration practices suggested by the manufacturer of semi-automatic James Machines should be followed in preference to this practice.

Standard Test Method for Comparison of Rearfoot Motion Control Properties of Running Shoes

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method allows the rearfoot control properties of running shoes or corrective orthoses within shoes to be compared provided they are tested concurrently and under identical conditions.  
5.2 Tests of this type are commonly used in the development and performance testing of running shoes and other in-shoe devices. Careful adherence to the requirements and recommendations of this test shall provide results which can be compared between different laboratories.
Note 1: The variance in rearfoot motion due to differences between shoes is generally smaller than the variance between subjects. Direct comparisons between shoes tested in different experiments is therefore not possible.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the measurement of certain angular motions of the lower extremity during running, specifically, the frontal plane projection of the pronation and supination of the lower leg relative to the foot (“rearfoot motion”) and methods by which the effects of different running shoes on rearfoot motion may be compared.  
1.2 As used in this test method, footwear may refer to running shoes, corrective shoe inserts (orthoses) or specific combinations of both. The effects of orthoses may vary from shoe to shoe. Therefore, comparisons involving orthoses shall be qualified by the specific style of shoes in which they are tested.  
1.3 This test method is limited to the measurement of the two dimensional, frontal plane projection of the relative angular motion between the lower leg and the foot (“rearfoot motion”). It is not a direct measure of pronation or supination, which are three dimensional motions.  
1.4 This test method is limited to running motions in which the heel makes first contact with the ground during each step.  
1.5 This test method is applicable to measurements of rearfoot motion made while subjects run on a treadmill or while they run overground under controlled conditions.
