Overview

ASTM A1062-10(2020), Standard Specification for Steel Castings Sampling, is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM International. The document outlines the inspection and sampling requirements for steel castings, covering a range of tests and methodologies that must be mutually agreed upon by both purchasers and producers before the actual production begins. The primary goal of the standard is to ensure that sample castings meet specified requirements prior to full-scale manufacturing, thereby reducing risks, preventing defects, and ensuring product quality.

ASTM A1062-10(2020) applies to all steel castings covered under ASTM Specifications A703/A703M, A781/A781M, A957/A957M, and A985/A985M. It is widely adopted within sectors that rely on steel castings for critical components, supporting compliance with inspection protocols and fostering supply chain transparency.

Key Topics

The standard addresses several essential aspects of steel castings sampling, including:

  • Sampling Requirements: Specifies both the number of samples to be produced and the categories of tests each sample must undergo.
  • Categories of Inspection: Requires sampling to encompass a broad range of inspection methods, such as:
    • Dimensional and machining inspections
    • Visual inspections
    • Magnetic particle testing
    • Liquid penetrant testing
    • Radiographic examinations
    • Ultrasonic testing
    • Leak tests
  • Sample Acceptance Criteria: Outlines the requirements for sample acceptance based on specified inspection outcomes. Only samples passing all agreed requirements are deemed acceptable for production.
  • Documentation: Emphasizes robust record-keeping, including details like:
    • Number and dimensions of sample castings
    • Results of each specified inspection and test
    • Comprehensive reporting and traceability of results
  • Criteria for New Sampling: Details when new sample development is needed-such as changes in gating, risering practices, pattern drawings, or molding materials that could affect casting quality.

Applications

ASTM A1062-10(2020) is foundational for industries utilizing steel castings, such as:

  • Industrial Equipment Manufacturing: Ensures consistent part quality for heavy machinery and components subject to high stress.
  • Pressure Vessel and Piping: Supports reliability and safety for castings used in critical pressure-containing parts.
  • Automotive and Aerospace: Facilitates high standards for cast parts with tight tolerances and stringent inspection criteria.
  • Oil, Gas, and Energy Sectors: Assists in managing risk and compliance for components where failure is not an option.

By following this standard, organizations improve product reliability, reduce non-conformance risks, and build assurance in their quality control practices. It also strengthens supplier relationships by setting clear, shared expectations for casting inspections.

Related Standards

ASTM A1062-10(2020) closely aligns with several other key ASTM specifications related to steel castings:

  • ASTM A703/A703M: General requirements for steel castings used in pressure-containing parts.
  • ASTM A781/A781M: Common requirements for general industrial steel and alloy castings.
  • ASTM A957/A957M: Specifications for investment castings of steel and alloy.
  • ASTM A985/A985M: Guidelines for steel investment castings destined for pressure-containing parts.

Compliance with ASTM A1062 helps support overarching quality management systems and often forms part of customer or regulatory audit requirements. It also aligns with internationally recognized principles on standardization, as established by the World Trade Organization’s Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee, ensuring broad acceptance and utility in global markets.
