Overview
ASTM B814-06(2020) is the standard specification established by ASTM International for Nickel-Chromium-Iron-Molybdenum-Tungsten Alloy (UNS N06920) plates, sheets, and strips. This specification outlines the requirements for delivering these materials in hot or cold rolled, solution-annealed, and descaled conditions, primarily for general corrosion service applications. The standard ensures material consistency, quality, and traceability for critical industries requiring robust performance in corrosive environments.
UNS N06920 alloys covered by ASTM B814-06(2020) are distinguished by their superior corrosion resistance properties, making them suitable for applications in demanding sectors such as chemical processing, power generation, marine, and petrochemical industries.
Key Topics
Material Scope:
- Covers rolled plate, sheet, and strip forms of UNS N06920 alloy.
- Sheet and strip are delivered hot or cold rolled, annealed, and descaled, unless a bright finish is achieved through solution annealing.
- Plate is provided as hot rolled, solution-annealed, and descaled.
Dimensional and Mechanical Requirements:
- Thickness, width, and length tolerances are governed by referenced standards (e.g., ASTM B906).
- Mechanical properties specified include minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at room temperature.
Chemical Composition:
- Prescribes limits for key elements: Nickel, Chromium, Iron, Molybdenum, Tungsten, Cobalt, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon.
- Ensures the alloy offers consistent corrosion resistance and mechanical integrity.
Product Marking and Certification:
- Each product is clearly marked with the specification number, heat number, manufacturer’s identification, and size for traceability.
- Certification reporting and inspection requirements are identified for compliance and quality assurance.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance:
- Users are responsible for adhering to safety, health, and environmental practices, referencing the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
- The standard is developed in alignment with international trade and standardization principles.
Applications
- General Corrosion Service: The alloy is designed for service in environments where resistance to a wide range of corrosive media is critical.
- Chemical Processing: Ideal for equipment and structural components exposed to aggressive chemicals.
- Petrochemical Industry: Applied in piping, heat exchangers, and storage tanks handling corrosive fluids and gases.
- Power Generation: Used in systems subject to high temperature and corrosive conditions.
- Marine Environments: Suitable for structures and machinery exposed to seawater, offering long-term durability and reduced maintenance.
- Fabrication: Sheet, strip, and plate forms support a range of manufacturing processes including cutting, welding, and forming.
Related Standards
- ASTM B906: General Requirements for Flat-Rolled Nickel and Nickel Alloys Plate, Sheet, and Strip
- ASTM Standards referenced: For chemical composition, mechanical testing, and dimensional tolerances.
Practical Value
Complying with ASTM B814-06(2020) guarantees that UNS N06920 plate, sheet, and strip materials will meet the rigors of general corrosion service. This is crucial for manufacturers, suppliers, and end users demanding reliable, high-performance nickel-based alloys that maintain structural integrity and resist degradation in hostile environments.
