Copper and copper alloys - Sheet and strip for building purposes
This European Standard specifies requirements for copper sheet and strip in thicknesses from 0,4 mm up to and including 1 mm and in widths up to and including 1 250 mm.
This European Standard is applicable to sheet and strip for use in building construction, e.g. for roof drainage systems, gutters, down pipes, roof coverings, external wall claddings, dormer windows, verges, chimney flashings and roof valleys.

Overview
EN 1172:2011 - "Copper and copper alloys - Sheet and strip for building purposes" (CEN) defines requirements for copper sheet and strip used in building construction. The standard applies to thicknesses from 0.4 mm up to and including 1.0 mm and widths up to and including 1 250 mm, supplied as straight lengths (sheet) or coils (strip). Typical building uses include roof drainage, gutters, downpipes, roof coverings, claddings, flashings and valleys.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material designations and composition: Materials are designated by symbol or number (e.g., Cu‑DHP / CW024A). New materials added in this edition include CuSn0,15 (CW117C), CuAl5Zn5Sn1 (CW309G), CuSn4 (CW450K) and CuZn15 (CW502L). Composition limits are given in the standard’s tables.
- Material condition: Two designation systems - R… (tensile‑strength based) and H… (hardness‑based). Exact conversion between them is not provided.
- Dimensions & tolerances: Nominal thickness, width, length and coil inside diameters are standardized (see Table 3 of EN 1172). Thickness range 0.4–1.0 mm and widths up to 1 250 mm are covered.
- Straightness & flatness: Edge straightness tolerances are specified (typically up to 1 mm per 1 000 mm gauge length; maximums given for longer lengths - e.g., 3 mm for 3 000 mm sheets and 5 mm for 5 000 mm strips). Flatness limits are defined in tabulated form; special façade quality can be agreed between purchaser and supplier.
- Mechanical properties & tests: Tensile strength, 0.2% proof, elongation and Vickers hardness are required (tests per EN ISO 6892‑1, EN ISO 6507‑1/2, ISO 4739). Sampling and test methods are referenced.
- Surface quality: Surface must be suitable for manufacturing process - smooth, clean and free from marked discoloration. Cosmetic defects permitted if they do not impair serviceability; enhanced façade quality is available by agreement.
- Ordering & product designation: The standard provides a clear product designation format (e.g., Sheet EN 1172 – Cu‑DHP – R240 – 0,6 × 1 000 × 2 000) and specifies the ordering information suppliers and purchasers should exchange.
Applications
- Roofing and roof drainage (gutters, downpipes)
- Roof coverings and valleys
