Overview
prEN ISO 888:2026 - Fasteners - Bolts, screws and studs - Nominal lengths and thread lengths (ISO/DIS 888:2026) specifies standard lengths and thread lengths for bolts, screws, and studs with ISO metric threads, as defined by ISO 68-1. This standard is established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and is crucial for ensuring consistency, interchangeability, and clarity in the design and specification of fasteners in mechanical, construction, and industrial applications.
Designed for use in product standards and engineering documentation, prEN ISO 888 helps manufacturers, engineers, and technical professionals standardize fastener dimensions, minimize ambiguity, and support compliance with international best practices.
Key Topics
- Applicability: Covers bolts, screws, and studs using ISO metric screw threads, as per ISO 68-1.
- Length Definitions: Clarifies how nominal lengths and thread lengths should be measured for different types of fasteners, including those with various head designs and those that are headless.
- Dimensional Ranges: Specifies standard nominal lengths ranging from 2 mm up to 1000 mm or more, as well as thread length calculations based on fastener diameter and length.
- Product Grades and Tolerances: Aligns with ISO 4759-1, defining product grades A, B, and C, ensuring consistent tolerances for both lengths and thread lengths.
- Thread Length Rules: Provides formulas for calculating thread lengths based on fastener nominal length and diameter, with special considerations for stainless steel fasteners in accordance with ISO 3506-1.
- Limits and Transitions: Establishes standard minimum and maximum lengths for various fastener types, including rules for when partially or fully threaded configurations are required.
Applications
prEN ISO 888 is integral to industries that rely on the precise specification and interchangeability of fasteners such as:
- Automotive Engineering: Standardization streamlines assembly, inventory management, and vehicle maintenance by ensuring bolts and screws meet global thread and length requirements.
- Construction and Steel Structures: Enables accurate specification of fasteners for structures, reducing errors during design and procurement phases.
- Machinery Manufacturing: Facilitates the design of machinery parts that rely on standardized bolts, screws, and studs for compatibility and safety.
- Product Design and Engineering: Provides a reliable reference for engineers and designers to select appropriate fastener dimensions for prototypes, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Procurement and Quality Assurance: Eases sourcing from global suppliers and assists in technical inspections for conformity to ISO metric fastener standards.
The practical value is realized in improved interoperability, reduced design conflicts, minimized customization needs, and enhanced safety and reliability of assemblies.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 888 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 7, Reference standards.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 888:2012), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— terms and definitions have been added;
— standard nominal lengths have been extended to longer lengths, for bolts with diameters up to 100 mm
(in relation to the development of ISO 898-11), fully threaded rods or other long fasteners (see Clause 6);
— nominal diameters M3,5 and M7 have been added;
— formula for l with regards to l and the 5P difference remained unchanged, but P has been
s,min g,max
specified as always being the coarse pitch value (even for bolts with fine pitch thread);
— for stainless steel fasteners with reduced loadability due to head design and in accordance with
ISO 3506-1, thread length b ≥ 3d have been recommended (see 7);
— the limits for the shortest and longest standard nominal lengths l have been recorded, to make them
nom
traceable (see Clause 8);
— existing limits between partially threaded and fully threaded bolt and screws (when both are specified
in the same product standard) have been recorded (see 8.5).

Points and ends for bolts and screws are usually included in the length and thread length except for the pilot
point, as specified in ISO 4753.
5.2 Bolts and screws
For bolts and screws with effective bearing surface perpendicular to the axis, the length l shall be defined
from the bearing face to the end of the bolt or screw; see Figure 1.
