Overview

EN ISO 7435:2024 - Fasteners - Slotted set screws with dog point - specifies the characteristics, dimensions and requirements for slotted set screws with dog point in steel and stainless steel, product grade A, with metric coarse pitch threads M1,6 to M12. The standard covers both regular standard lengths (long dog point) and short standard lengths (short dog point) and defines dimensional, mechanical and surface requirements as well as marking and labelling provisions.

Key topics

  • Scope and product range: Thread sizes M1,6–M12; product grade A; materials: steel and stainless steel.
  • Dimensions and geometry: Detailed nominal lengths, thread lengths, long and short dog point dimensions, and point angles (regular lengths: α = 90° or 120° at manufacturer’s choice; short lengths: α = 120°).
  • Tolerances and threads: Thread tolerance class 6g and reference to ISO 965-1 for thread tolerances.
  • Mechanical properties: Default hardness classes specified; optional hardness classes and stainless grades selectable from ISO 898-5 (steel set screws) and ISO 3506-3 (stainless steel set screws). New additions include stainless grades A2 and A4 with hardness classes 12H and 21H.
  • Surface condition and coatings: Acceptable surface conditions include “as processed” (steel) and “clean and bright” or “passivated” (stainless). Coatings per ISO 4042 (electroplated) and ISO 10683 (non-electrolytically applied zinc flake) are referenced. Surface integrity and discontinuity limits refer to ISO 6157-1.
  • Inspection and acceptance: Acceptance inspection guided by ISO 3269; general requirements per ISO 8992 and tolerance rules per ISO 4759-1.
  • Marking and labelling: Marking on the product is not mandatory unless agreed between purchaser and supplier; package labelling requirements are specified.

Applications

  • Used where a flush, headless fastener with a guided point is needed to locate or secure parts - e.g., securing collars, gears, pulleys, set collars and components on shafts.
  • Relevant for mechanical design, assembly and maintenance in manufacturing, machinery, automotive, automation and industrial equipment where standardized set screws ensure interchangeability, safety and predictable performance.
  • Who uses it: fastener manufacturers, procurement/specification engineers, quality and inspection teams, OEMs and distributors.

Related standards

  • ISO 898-5 (mechanical properties - set screws)
  • ISO 3506-3 (stainless steel fasteners)
  • ISO 888, ISO 965-1, ISO 4753 (dimensional options & thread tolerances)
  • ISO 4042, ISO 10683 (coating systems)
  • ISO 6157-1, ISO 3269, ISO 4759-1, ISO 8992

This standard ensures consistent dimensions, mechanical performance and acceptance criteria for slotted set screws with dog point, improving compatibility and quality control across supply chains.
