General Information
Overview
EN 2591-219:2002 is a CEN-adopted aerospace test standard (prepared by AECMA) that specifies a method for checking the voltage strength (voltage withstand) of insulated terminal lugs and in-line splices. It is intended for use in conjunction with EN 2591-100 (general test method requirements). The procedure evaluates the insulation integrity of crimped connector terminations under a controlled high-voltage, saline-immersed condition representative of severe environmental stress.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies only to insulated terminal lugs and in-line splices; used together with EN 2591-100 for general test conditions.
- Specimen preparation:
- Fit specimens with normal accessories and wire according to the technical specification.
- Technical specification must specify number of specimens, cable type, installation/wiring, and target voltage strength.
- For terminal lugs: the spade end may be cut flush with the insulator and insulated (e.g., beeswax) so the crimp area remains accessible.
- For in-line splices: cut the shortest cable flush with the insulator and coat to insulate the cut end.
- Test medium: Immerse the crimped area in an aqueous solution containing 5% sodium chloride (saline) to cover the crimped area.
- Electrode and voltage application:
- Use an immersed electrode located no more than 50 mm from the specimen.
- Increase test voltage gradually at a rate not exceeding 500 V/s up to 1 500 V, 50 Hz, or to the voltage specified in the technical specification.
- Maintain the target voltage for a minimum of 60 seconds.
- Acceptance criterion: There shall be no burn-out of the insulation during the test.
Applications and users
This standard is used to validate insulation robustness of crimped connections in aerospace electrical systems and is relevant for:
- Aerospace manufacturers and OEMs (electrical harness and component qualification)
- Connector and terminal lug suppliers (product design verification)
- Test laboratories and quality control teams (acceptance and routine testing)
- Certification and compliance engineers verifying electrical safety and environmental resilience
