(Main)Leather - Chemical determination of formaldehyde content - Part 3: Determination of formaldehyde emissions from leather (ISO 17226-3:2011)
Leather - Chemical determination of formaldehyde content - Part 3: Determination of formaldehyde emissions from leather (ISO 17226-3:2011)
ISO 17226-3:2011 specifies a method for determining the emission of formaldehyde from leathers. This method is based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is selective and also allows the emission of other low molecular aldehydes and ketones to be observed.
ISO 17226-3:2011 deals with the release of formaldehyde to the gas phase. Therefore, the obtained results are not comparable with the results of methods described in ISO 17726-1 and ISO 17226-2 which are based on extraction with liquid water.

Overview - EN ISO 17226-3:2011 (Leather formaldehyde emissions)
EN ISO 17226-3:2011 (ISO 17226-3:2011) specifies a laboratory method for the determination of formaldehyde emissions from leather. The method measures formaldehyde released to the gas phase and captured in water, then quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after derivatization with 2,4‑dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). The standard is selective for formaldehyde and also allows observation of other low‑molecular aldehydes and ketones. Results from this emission method are not comparable with extraction‑based methods in ISO 17226‑1/‑2 or ISO 17726‑1.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Specimen is suspended above demineralized water in a sealed 1 L polyethylene bottle, incubated at (60 ± 2) °C for (180 ± 15) min. Volatile formaldehyde is absorbed into the water, reacted with DNPH, and analyzed by reversed‑phase HPLC (UV detection, ~360 nm).
- Sampling and specimen size: Six specimens, typically (100 × 40) mm, sampled per ISO 2418 and prepared per ISO 2419. Five for emission tests, one for volatile matter (ISO 4684).
- Reagents and preparation: DNPH solution, acetonitrile, and a formaldehyde stock solution (prepared and standardized by iodine/thiosulfate titration) are specified. Water must meet ISO 3696 grade 3.
- Apparatus: 1 L polyethylene bottles with internal hook, oven (60 °C), HPLC system with UV detector, membrane filters (0.45 µm).
- Procedure essentials: 50 ml demineralized water per bottle; post‑incubation water aliquot mixed with acetonitrile and DNPH, allowed to react (60–180 min), filtered and injected to HPLC. Calibration and recovery checks are required.
Applications and users
EN ISO 17226-3:2011 is used for:
- Quality control and batch testing in tanneries and leather goods manufacturing.
- Product safety assessment for consumer goods (footwear, upholstery, garments) where formaldehyde emissions are regulated.
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies validating compliance with chemical safety limits.
- Regulatory and forensic testing when measuring airborne formaldehyde release rather than extractable content.
Users include leather chemists, analytical laboratories, product compliance teams, and R&D departments focused on low‑emission leather finishing.
Related standards
- ISO 17226‑1 (HPLC extraction method) and ISO 17226‑2 (colorimetric extraction) - extraction‑based formaldehyde tests.
- ISO 17726‑1 - other extraction methods (not comparable with emission results).
- ISO 2418, ISO 2419 (sampling and sample preparation), ISO 4684 (volatile matter), ISO 3696 (water quality).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 17226-3 was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee
CEN/TC 289, Leather, in collaboration with Chemical Test Commission of the International Union of Leather
Technologists and Chemists Societies (IUC Commission, IULTCS), in accordance with the Agreement on
technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
IULTCS, originally formed in 1897, is a world-wide organization of professional leather societies to further the
advancement of leather science and technology. IULTCS has three Commissions, which are responsible for
establishing international methods for the sampling and testing of leather. ISO recognizes IULTCS as an
international standardizing body for the preparation of test methods for leather.
ISO 17226 consists of the following parts, under the general title Leather — Chemical determination of
formaldehyde content:
⎯ Part 1: Method using high performance liquid chromatography
⎯ Part 2: Method using colorimetric analysis
⎯ Part 3: Determination of formaldehyde emissions from leather
