- Radiant heat resistance (detailed in this amendment)
- Testing method: EN ISO 6942 (radiant heat test).
- Test location: on the back of the glove.
- Heat flux density: 40 kW/m².
- Specimen size: 80 mm × 170 mm sample taken from each glove back (from one pair).
- Measurement: two t24 values are obtained and their arithmetic mean is calculated and reported to the nearest whole second.
- Minimum requirement: material shall have t24 ≥ 18 s when tested as specified.
- Standards governance
- The amendment was prepared by CEN/TC 162 (“Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets”) and, if approved, will be incorporated into national standards for CEN members.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of firefighter gloves use EN 659 (and this amendment) to design materials and constructions that meet performance thresholds, especially for thermal protection.
- Testing laboratories implement the specified EN ISO 6942 radiative heat test (sample size, flux, t24 reporting) to certify compliance.
- Procurement officers and fire services reference the standard when specifying and purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure firefighter safety and regulatory compliance.
- Regulators and conformity assessment bodies use the standard to verify that firefighter gloves satisfy EU Directive requirements and national transpositions.
