Overview

EN 847-3:2013 - Tools for woodworking: Safety requirements - Part 3: Clamping devices is a CEN European Standard that defines safety requirements for clamping devices used to fasten milling tools and circular saw blades on woodworking machines. The standard identifies hazards from clamping device use and specifies design measures and information (marking, instructions) to eliminate or reduce those hazards. It applies to friction‑ and form‑lock clamping devices but excludes certain arbors and flanges (see Related Standards).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & exclusions: Covers clamping devices for fastening milling tools and circular saw blades; excludes arbors per EN 848-1 and clamping flanges per EN 1870; does not cover machine–device connection hazards.
  • Design requirements:
    • Materials and construction must withstand expected operational loads; compatibility with tool mounting surfaces is required.
    • Hydrostatic open‑system clamping devices must retain the tool on loss of pressure (e.g., additional mechanical locking).
    • Cross‑sectional shape must be essentially circular perpendicular to the rotation axis, with limited exceptions (thread holes, flats for wrenches, balancing flats).
  • Balance:
    • Clamping devices > 0.5 kg must be balanced.
    • Specific balancing rules for keyways (inside/outside) and minimum balance quality derived from ISO 1940‑1 (different G‑values for general devices and devices with movable parts).
  • Testing & verification:
    • Test samples, dimensions and density requirements are specified.
    • Test conditions include multiplying maximum speed and torque by 1.5 for certain checks, accelerated runs to maximum rotational speed, defined hold and deceleration times, and torsional moment transmission checks.
    • Detailed formulae for calculating test piece dimensions and inertia are provided.
  • Marking & information for use:
    • Mandatory marking rules for bore‑ and shank‑mounted clamping devices, plus user information including safe working practice and correct assembly/installation guidance.

The article discusses EN 847-3:2013, a European Standard that outlines safety requirements for clamping devices used to secure milling tools and circular saw blades on woodworking machines. The standard addresses the hazards associated with these devices and provides methods for minimizing or eliminating these hazards through design and information provision. However, the standard does not apply to arbors for spindle moulding machines or clamping flanges for circular sawing blades used on circular sawing machines. It also does not cover hazards related to the connection between the clamping device and the woodworking machine. Bore mounted tools on an interchangeable arbor are considered shank mounted tools.
