Overview
EN ISO 8980-3:2022/prA1 (Amendment 1 to ISO 8980-3:2022) updates transmittance requirements and test methods for uncut, unmounted finished spectacle lenses. The amendment clarifies claims handling, tightens measurement uncertainty limits, and adds explicit requirements and instrument specifications for wavelength-cut claims and UV attenuation performance. The document is circulated as a draft amendment (ISO 8980-3:2022/DAM 1:2025) and aligns with ISO/CEN parallel processing.
Key Topics
Scope change: The scope sentence is amended to cover both requirements and claims for transmittance properties of uncut and unmounted finished spectacle lenses, including attenuation of solar radiation.
Wavelength-cut claims (new 6.7):
- For a nominated wavelength cut, spectral transmittance must be < 5.0% at that wavelength.
- Spectral transmittance must be < 1.0% for all wavelengths from 280 nm up to (nominated wavelength − 10 nm).
- The claimed performance must remain satisfied after the UV irradiation procedure specified in clause 7.7.
Measurement uncertainty (new 7.2.1):
- Absolute uncertainty ≤ 2.0% for spectral transmittance > 20%.
- Absolute uncertainty ≤ 1.0% for spectral transmittance in the range ≤ 20% and ≥ 5%.
- Absolute uncertainty ≤ 0.5% for spectral transmittance < 5%.
- All at a 95% confidence level.
Instrument and method requirements for wavelength-cut claims (7.2.2):
- Measurement device relative uncertainty ≤ 10% and wavelength uncertainty within ±1.0 nm.
- Spectral resolution ≤ 1 nm; spectral bandwidth (FWHM) ≤ 2 nm.
- Measurement range: 280 nm to 780 nm.
- Use a plano lens of 2 mm thickness as reference (state thickness if different), measure at the reference point with the incident beam normal to the front surface.
Annex G (informative): Describes effects of lens geometry and instrument factors on wavelength-cut measurement. Notes that thickness changes can shift cut-off by approx. 3–5 nm per 1 mm and bandwidth changes can shift cut-off (example: ~1 nm shift when moving from 2 nm to 5 nm bandwidth).
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing for spectacle lens production.
- Verifying and supporting marketing claims (wavelength-cut and UV protection).
- Research and development for lens materials and coatings where spectral cut-off is critical.
- Conformity assessment and compliance with national regulations when referenced.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
