Overview
EN 772-14:2001 (CEN) specifies a laboratory method to determine the moisture movement of aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units between two defined extreme moisture conditions. The standard addresses measurement of moisture-induced expansion (after soaking) and drying shrinkage (after oven drying). Results support quality assurance, product specification and performance assessment for masonry units.
Key Topics
- Scope & purpose: Measures dimensional movement of masonry units of the same concrete composition and sampling between a soaked condition and a dried condition.
- Specimens: Whole units or parts cut from whole units. The standard requires specimens to be sealed after sampling and conditioned; the usual age at test start is 28 days unless otherwise specified. The minimum number of specimens is six.
- Conditioning and timing:
- Store sealed for 14 days, then laboratory conditioning for a further 14 days (20 °C ± 2 °C, RH 50–65 % unless otherwise stated).
- Moisture expansion: soak selected specimens for 96 h (4 days) in water at 20 °C ± 2 °C.
- Drying shrinkage: dry selected specimens in a ventilated oven at 33 °C ± 3 °C for 21 days.
- Measurements & accuracy:
- Gauge pads fixed to each specimen at specified gauge lengths.
- Measuring device accuracy at least 0.002 mm; calibration using Invar rods.
- Results expressed as expansion and shrinkage coefficients in mm/m; arithmetic means reported to two decimal places and total movement coefficient to 0.01 mm/m.
Applications
EN 772-14:2001 is used by manufacturers, test laboratories and specifiers to:
- Verify dimensional stability of aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units under moisture cycles.
- Support product specifications and compliance with prEN 771-3 (aggregate concrete units) and prEN 771-5 (manufactured stone).
- Inform quality control (QA) programs and acceptance testing for masonry unit production.
Practical benefits include repeatable measurement procedures, defined environmental conditions for comparison, and standardized reporting items that facilitate consistency across laboratories and national implementation.

The EN 772-14:2001 standard provides a crucial methodology for assessing the moisture movement of aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units. Its primary scope is to establish a standardized procedure that ensures consistency and accuracy in measuring moisture variations, which is essential for evaluating the performance and durability of masonry materials under fluctuating environmental conditions. One of the strengths of this standard lies in its detailed specification of the testing conditions and procedures. By defining two extreme moisture conditions for the analysis, the standard allows for a comprehensive understanding of how different masonry units respond to moisture changes. This specificity is pivotal for manufacturers, builders, and architects who require reliable data to make informed decisions about material selection and structural design. Moreover, EN 772-14:2001 is highly relevant in the context of current construction practices, where sustainable building and material longevity are paramount. The outcomes derived from adhering to this standard not only contribute to individual project success but also enhance overall building performance, ensuring that structures maintain their integrity over time despite environmental stressors. The standard's applicability across diverse aggregate concrete and manufactured stone types highlights its versatility and adaptability within the industry. By utilizing this standard, stakeholders can ensure compliance with European requirements, which is increasingly important in a globalized market. In summary, EN 772-14:2001 stands out as a vital document for standardizing the assessment of moisture movement in masonry units, providing a framework that supports quality assurance, durability assessment, and the advancement of building methodologies in the construction sector.
