The EN 16147:2017 standard delivers a comprehensive framework for testing, performance rating, and requirement specification for domestic hot water units utilizing heat pumps with electrically driven compressors. Its scope is explicitly focused on performance evaluation for a range of heat pump systems, including air/water, brine/water, water/water, and direct exchange/water heat pump water heaters, alongside heat pump combination heaters that incorporate a domestic hot water storage tank for the production of hot water. One of the key strengths of EN 16147:2017 is its thorough methodology for assessing water heating energy efficiency, which is crucial in promoting energy-efficient solutions in residential settings. The standard emphasizes the importance of accurate performance ratings, enabling manufacturers and consumers to make informed decisions when selecting heat pump systems for domestic hot water production. By establishing a testing procedure solely for the production of domestic hot water, it ensures clarity and specificity in evaluating these systems, avoiding confusion with other applications such as space heating. Moreover, this standard is highly relevant in the context of the increasing focus on sustainability and energy efficiency within the heating sector. Given that it applies only to integrated systems supplied as a complete package, it helps to streamline the evaluation process, ensuring that users receive a cohesive and reliable performance assessment. The exclusion of simultaneous operation testing for space heating and domestic hot water production is a clear acknowledgment of the complexities involved in such evaluations, which could compromise the accuracy of performance ratings. In summary, the EN 16147:2017 standard is a vital document for the testing and performance rating of domestic hot water units that utilize electrically driven heat pump systems. Its specific focus on water heating energy efficiency positions it as an essential resource for manufacturers, regulators, and consumers committed to enhancing domestic hot water production through energy-efficient technology.
