Design and application of gypsum blocks
This European Standard defines the rules for the design of gypsum blocks as specified in EN 12859, assembled with adhesives as specified in EN 12860. Accessory products are also defined in this document. It is applicable to non-loadbearing partition walls and internal insulation of walls in rooms of residential buildings, offices, hospitals, schools etc. and to linings of posts, beams, ducts, shafts etc, that are suitable to receive finishes such as paint and wallpaper without any prior traditional plastering, but having had normal preparation prior to painting.
Certain components requiring special provisions are not covered by this standard and require special consideration.

Overview
EN 15318:2007 - Design and application of gypsum blocks (CEN) specifies the rules for designing gypsum block constructions (as defined in EN 12859) assembled with gypsum‑based adhesives (EN 12860). The standard covers non‑loadbearing partition walls, internal insulation linings and encasements (posts, beams, ducts, shafts) in buildings such as residential units, offices, hospitals and schools. Accessory products are also defined. Certain specialised components are excluded and require separate consideration.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope and terms: Definitions for partitions, backing partitions, ducts, shafts, panels and stiffeners to ensure consistent design language.
- Materials: Requirement to use gypsum blocks per EN 12859 and adhesives per EN 12860; allowance for compatible accessories.
- Structure & function considerations: Guidance on selection based on building type, dimensional accuracy, services, connections and intended functions (thermal, acoustic, fire protection, impact resistance).
- Specific conditions:
- Damp rooms - use of water‑repellent gypsum blocks where surfaces are exposed to water.
- Impact exposure - recommendation to use higher‑density blocks in high‑traffic or prone‑impact areas (schools, corridors).
- Overhanging partitions - special provisions to ensure safe use.
- Performance requirements:
- Mechanical strength & stability - non‑loadbearing but self‑supporting; design limits and panel sizing rules are provided (including use of stiffeners).
- Fire behaviour - reaction to fire: gypsum blocks with <1% homogeneous organic content are treated as Euroclass A1; fire resistance values and test requirements reference EN 13501‑2 and EN 1364‑1.
- Noise protection - sound insulation guidance and Rw / C / Ctr values based on EN ISO 717‑1 and test data.
- Thermal performance - considerations for thermal resistance and internal insulation.
Practical Applications & Users
Who uses EN 15318:2007:
- Architects and building designers specifying internal partitions and linings
- Structural and fire engineers assessing compliance and selecting fire‑resistant solutions
- Acoustic consultants specifying sound insulation performance
- Manufacturers and suppliers of gypsum blocks and adhesives
- Contractors and installers designing joints, stiffeners and detailing for damp or high‑use areas
- Building control authorities and test laboratories verifying performance
Practical uses:
- Selecting the right gypsum block type and adhesive for partitions, ducts or linings
- Designing panel sizes and stiffener layouts to meet mechanical and safety limits
- Choosing water‑repellent or high‑density blocks for specific environments
- Defining required fire and acoustic tests or accepted classifications for compliance
