Overview

EN ISO 11114-1:2020/A1:2023 is Amendment 1 to Part 1 of the ISO 11114 series: Gas cylinders - Compatibility of cylinder and valve materials with gas contents - Part 1: Metallic materials. Published by CEN/ISO in 2023, this amendment updates the gas/material compatibility guidance (Table 1) for several aggressive gases and gas mixtures. It clarifies material selection, service limitations and special precautions for metallic cylinders and valve components when storing or transporting reactive and corrosive gases.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Gas/material compatibility: Updated entries for gas numbers 5, 6, 49, 58, 59, 61, 62 and 63 (e.g., boron trichloride, boron trifluoride, fluorine, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen iodide, hydrogen sulphide).
  • Hydrolysis and hygroscopic behaviour: Several gases hydrolyse on contact with moisture (producing hydrogen halides) or are highly hygroscopic, increasing corrosion risk.
  • Corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement risks: The amendment highlights severe corrosion of common metals and the potential for hydrogen embrittlement under wet conditions.
  • Recommended materials and limitations:
    • High corrosion‑resistant nickel alloys (examples: Incoloy®, Hastelloy®) are identified as suitable for many of these gases (note: product mentions are informational, not endorsements).
    • Brass: acceptable only as a valve body in some cases, not for general valve components.
    • Stainless steel (SS): restrictions for diaphragms and springs where failure would create unsafe conditions.
  • Design/performance limits:
    • QTS (qualified tensile strength) materials are limited to a maximum ultimate tensile strength of 950 MPa for certain gases.
    • Operational guidance: maintain cylinder maximum working pressure at 15 °C below TP/5 (one‑fifth of test pressure) in some cases to reduce stress levels.
  • Mixture thresholds: Small trace concentrations may be permissible (e.g., mixtures ≤ 0.1% of certain gases in AA cylinders; brass valves acceptable up to 1 000 ppm NO in some mixtures).

Applications

  • Material selection for gas cylinders and valves used in industrial, medical and specialty gas supply.
  • Development of procurement specifications, design validation and conformity documentation for transportable gas cylinders.
  • Safety assessments, inspection criteria and maintenance rules for systems storing corrosive or reactive gases.
  • Training and operational guidance for gas suppliers, cylinder refill stations, and regulators.

Who should use this standard

  • Cylinder and valve manufacturers
  • Gas producers and distributors
  • Pressure equipment designers and safety engineers
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
  • Regulatory authorities and standards committees

Related standards
