Overview
EN 13167:2012/FprA1 is a European Standard developed by CEN that defines specifications for factory made cellular glass (CG) products used in thermal insulation for buildings. These insulation products are manufactured as boards or slabs and may include facings or coatings. The standard covers CG products that provide declared thermal resistance of at least 0.50 m²·K/W and a thermal conductivity not exceeding 0.065 W/(m·K) at 10 °C. It excludes in situ products and those used for building equipment or industrial installations. EN 13167:2012/FprA1 specifies product characteristics, test methods, conformity assessment, marking, and labelling requirements.
Key Topics
- Product Scope: Factory made cellular glass insulation boards and slabs, including multi-layered CG products.
- Thermal Performance: Focus on declaring thermal resistance and thermal conductivity to ensure effective energy efficiency in building insulation.
- Conformity Assessment: Implements assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) according to EN 13172, including Product Type Determination (PTD) and Factory Production Control (FPC).
- Release of Dangerous Substances: Requires verification and declaration following national or EU regulations to ensure safe indoor air quality.
- Marking and Labelling: Products must be marked with essential information, including intended use designated by abbreviation "ThIB" for thermal insulation in buildings.
- Durability and Mechanical Properties: Includes requirements for dimensional stability, compressive strength, bending strength, tensile strength, water permeability, and sound absorption to maintain long-term performance.
- Reaction to Fire: Specifies Euroclass ratings and performance prerequisites critical for building safety and compliance with fire regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Integrates with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) (EU 305/2011) ensuring harmonized standards across EU member states.
Applications
- Building Thermal Insulation: Cellular glass products manufactured to EN 13167:2012/FprA1 provide excellent thermal insulation for walls, floors, and roofs, helping to enhance energy efficiency of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
- Prefabricated Elements: CG boards and slabs are often used in composite panels and prefabricated insulating components, offering consistent thermal performance and durability.
- Moisture and Fire Resistance: Ideal for applications where moisture resistance and fire safety are critical, such as building façades, underground structures, and flat roofing systems.
- Sustainable Construction: Factory made CG products made according to this standard contribute to building sustainability through long service life, stability under weathering, and environmentally sensitive manufacturing processes.
Related Standards
- EN 13172 – Thermal insulating products: Assessment of constancy of performance of factory made products. Essential for conformity evaluation in conjunction with EN 13167.
- EN 14305 – Factory made rigid polyurethane foam (PUR) products. Some overlapping testing may apply for PTD and FPC purposes.
- EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR) (EU 305/2011) – Legal framework for CE marking and placing construction products on the European market, supported by EN 13167 clauses and Annex ZA.
- EN ISO 10456 – Building materials and products: Hygrothermal properties - Tabulated design values and procedures for determining declared and design thermal values.
- National regulations on dangerous substances – Complement EN 13167 requirements related to chemical safety and emissions, differing by country within Europe.
By adhering to EN 13167:2012/FprA1, manufacturers and specifiers ensure factory made cellular glass insulation products meet high standards of thermal efficiency, durability, safety, and compliance with European regulations, facilitating their appropriate use across diverse construction applications.
