Overview
EN ISO 12312-1:2022/A11:2024 is an internationally harmonized amendment standard developed by CEN for eye and face protection, specifically addressing sunglasses and related eyewear for general use. This standard establishes requirements and guidance for sunglasses designed to protect against solar radiation and ensure general safety and comfort for users. The amendment aligns the standard with European Regulation 2016/425 on personal protective equipment (PPE), making it a critical reference for manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and the eyewear industry throughout Europe.
Key Topics
- General Use Sunglasses: Clarifies the essential performance characteristics for non-specialized, everyday sunglasses intended for broad consumer use.
- Alignment with EU Legislation: Provides a presumption of conformity with Regulation 2016/425, facilitating market access and legal compliance for products within the EU and EFTA member states.
- Normative References: Lists indispensable supporting standards for lens testing, frame requirements, and optical properties, supporting comprehensive product evaluation.
- Ergonomics and Comfort: Focuses on safety, comfort, and usability by emphasizing material quality, surface condition, design strength, and minimal user impediment.
- Labelling and User Information: Outlines requirements for manufacturer instructions and product marking to ensure transparency and safety for end-users.
Applications
The EN ISO 12312-1:2022/A11:2024 standard applies to:
- Manufacturers of Sunglasses: Ensuring that sunglasses meet safety, protection, and labelling criteria before entering the market.
- Importers and Retailers: Verifying compliance with European PPE regulations and providing safe, reliable eyewear to consumers.
- Testing Laboratories: Conducting product conformity assessments, including optical, mechanical, and material property tests, based on referenced international standards.
- Regulatory Authorities: Enforcing product safety, market surveillance, and assisting in the harmonization of national regulations.
- Consumers: Benefiting from improved safety and performance in sunglasses designed for daily use, with clear instructions and reliable marking for informed choice.
Related Standards
Several referenced standards are crucial for compliant design and testing of sunglasses and related eyewear:
- EN ISO 12311:2023 - Test methods for sunglasses and related eyewear.
- EN ISO 18526 Series: Geometrical, physical, and mechanical properties, and headforms used in testing.
- EN ISO/CIE 11664-2:2022 - Standard illuminants for colorimetry, ensuring correct assessment of lens color and transparency.
- EN ISO 4007:2018 - Vocabulary for eye and face protection.
- EN ISO 8980-5:2005 - Minimum requirements for abrasion-resistant spectacle lens surfaces.
- EN ISO 11381:2016 - Specification for spectacle frame screw threads.
For full compliance, application of the latest referenced European and International Standards is required. Always verify inclusion of this standard in the latest list published in the Official Journal of the European Union to maintain valid conformity claims.
By adhering to EN ISO 12312-1:2022/A11:2024, stakeholders ensure consumer safety, facilitate market access, and support the production and sale of high-quality sunglasses for everyday use across Europe.
