prEN 12915-2 is a draft European Standard from CEN for reactivated granular activated carbon used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. It specifies the product’s identification, physical and chemical properties, test methods, and the information needed for labelling, transport, storage and use.
What does prEN 12915-2 specify?
prEN 12915-2 applies to reactivated granular activated carbon for drinking water treatment. The document describes the material, sets requirements and test methods for the product, and gives information on its use in water treatment.
The document is organised into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, description, physical properties, chemical properties, specific properties, test methods, and labelling, transportation and storage. Annex A gives general information on reactivated granular activated carbon.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | General information on reactivated granular activated carbon, including reactivation, composition, hydraulic characteristics, use, safe handling and emergency procedures |
What are the key requirements of prEN 12915-2?
prEN 12915-2 focuses on product identity, physical quality, adsorption performance, and traceability. In practice, it tells suppliers what to declare, what to test, and what limits the delivered product has to meet.
Product description and identity
Clause 4 identifies the material as activated carbon in two chemical name groups - high density skeleton and low density skeleton - and lists common synonyms such as reactivated GAC. It also gives the chemical formula, CAS Registry Number and EINECS references. For buyers and specifiers, this helps match procurement documents to the correct product family.
Clause 4.2 says granular activated carbon is a granular product, either shaped or irregular, and that commercial grades differ in adsorption characteristics, hardness, porosity, granulometry, shape and purity. That matters because the right grade depends on the treatment duty.
Physical property requirements
Clause 5.3 requires the particle size distribution to be determined on samples taken at completion of reactivation and to stay within the supplier’s stated tolerance. For irregular product, oversize plus undersize content is limited, and undersize alone is also limited. For moulded or extruded product, only a small fraction may pass a sieve close to the nominal diameter.
Clause 5.4 limits the non-wettable fraction. Clause 5.5 requires apparent density to meet a minimum level. Clause 5.6 requires the ball-pan hardness or abrasion to meet the supplier’s declared value. These checks matter because they affect filter hydraulics, attrition losses, handling and service life.
Chemical and adsorption performance
Clause 7 sets a minimum iodine number and requires the supplier to state the iodine numbers of the spent and reactivated material. It also says the purchaser should ask for other adsorption indices if needed, and should know whether the iodine number was determined on product that includes make-up and/or mark-up granular activated carbon. In practice, this is the main performance check for adsorption capacity.
Sampling and test methods
Clause 8 says laboratory samples have to be prepared using EN 12902, and only samples taken at the production site are valid for assessment under this document. It also assigns EN 12902 for the particle size distribution, non-wettable fraction, apparent density, mechanical strength and iodine number tests. This keeps acceptance testing tied to the produced batch, not to a changed sample taken later at delivery or from a filter.
Marking, delivery and storage
Clause 9 requires the product name, batch identity, net mass, reactivating company name and address, and a statement of conformity to EN 12915-2. It also sets delivery forms, transport precautions, and storage compatibility. For users, this supports traceability and helps avoid contamination, moisture uptake and contact with oxidants or volatile solvents.
What terms does prEN 12915-2 define?
- Virgin activated carbon - freshly manufactured activated carbon that has not been used and has not been reactivated.
- Spent granular activated carbon - granular activated carbon with reduced adsorption capacity after use.
- Reactivation - the process used to restore all or part of the adsorption capacity of spent granular activated carbon.
- Reactivated granular activated carbon - spent granular activated carbon that has undergone reactivation.
- Make-up granular activated carbon - virgin or reactivated material added to replace losses during reactivation handling, transport or the reactivation process itself.
- Mark-up granular activated carbon / top-up granular activated carbon - virgin or reactivated material added to replace in-service losses at the water treatment plant.
- Iodine number - the adsorption index used in this document to represent performance under specified conditions.
Who uses prEN 12915-2?
prEN 12915-2 is used by water treatment plant operators, reactivators, suppliers, purchasers, laboratories and quality managers. They use it to specify the product, check batch properties, write purchase requirements, carry out acceptance testing, and document marking and storage conditions. It is also relevant to organisations managing filters that use granular activated carbon for drinking water treatment.
What changed in prEN 12915-2 from the previous edition?
prEN 12915-2 will supersede EN 12915-2:2009. The stated changes include particle size distribution for moulded/extruded product, non-wettable fraction replacing wettability, the term bulk density packed replaced by apparent density, a declared value for mechanical strength as either ball-pan hardness or abrasion, and editorial harmonisation with other standards in the series.
Which standards are used with prEN 12915-2?
- EN 12901 - provides definitions for inorganic supporting and filtering materials used in water treatment.
- EN 12902 - provides the test methods used for sampling and analysis in this document.
- EN 12915-1:2026 - is cited as the source for the definition of virgin granular activated carbon and is the companion part for virgin material.
What does the prEN 12915-2 document contain?
The document contains identification data for reactivated granular activated carbon, product descriptions, physical and chemical property sections, and a specific performance requirement based on iodine number. It also contains the sampling rule that only production-site samples are valid for assessment, plus test-method references to EN 12902 for the main measurements.
Annex A adds practical background on thermal reactivation, furnace types, composition, density, hydraulic behaviour, filter use, safe handling and emergency response. It also includes the bed-life concept and a formula for comparing service performance across different filter designs.
