Overview

EN 933-11:2009 - Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates, Part 11 - provides a reference classification test for the constituents of coarse recycled aggregate. Published by CEN, this standard describes a simple, reproducible method for identifying and estimating the relative proportions of constituents in coarse recycled aggregates (e.g., concrete, masonry, unbound rock, bituminous material, glass, and miscellaneous items). It is intended as a reference method for type testing and dispute resolution; alternative methods may be used for factory production control if an appropriate working relationship with this reference method is established.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and limits: Applies to coarse recycled aggregates (4 mm – 63 mm fractions). Not appropriate for lightweight aggregates covered by EN 13055.
  • Sample preparation: Sampling and reduction in accordance with EN 932-1 and EN 932-2. Test portion masses are specified (e.g., minimum 50 kg for D = 63 mm; 20 kg for D ≤ 32 mm).
  • Sieving: Use 63 mm and 4 mm sieves (EN 933-2) to isolate the 4/D fraction to be examined.
  • Drying: Dry to constant mass at (40 ± 5) °C (or 110 ± 5 °C where appropriate) and record drying temperature.
  • Constituent sorting: Hand-sort non-floating particles into defined classes (Rc concrete/mortar, Ru unbound aggregate, Rb clay masonry, Ra bituminous, Rg glass, X other/cohesive). Clay/soil are separated and recorded.
  • Floating particles: Floating constituents are collected by immersion and their volume V determined using a graduated cylinder and plunger; results expressed as volume per unit mass (cm3/kg). Formulae for calculating proportions are provided (e.g., FL (cm3/kg) = 1000 × V / M1).
  • Reporting and rounding: Constituent proportions are reported by mass (%) except floating particles. Percentages rounded to one decimal (except ≥10 % - no decimal). Test report must reference EN 933-11 and include sample and lab identification, drying temperature, date, and constituent proportions.
  • Annex A: Procedure for improved precision when floating particles are present in very low proportions (large test portions and water-content correction).

Applications and users

  • Quality control and type testing of recycled coarse aggregates for concrete and construction products
  • Independent testing laboratories and national testing authorities for dispute resolution
  • Aggregate producers, concrete manufacturers, precast plants and specifiers establishing compliance and material composition
  • Product certification bodies and environmental/recycling managers monitoring recycled aggregate quality

Related standards

  • EN 932 series (sampling and sample reduction)
  • EN 933-2 (test sieves) and EN 932-5 (equipment and calibration)

3.1
aggregate size
designation of aggregate in terms of lower (d) and upper (D) sieve sizes expressed as d/D
NOTE This designation accepts the presence of some particles which will be retained on the upper sieve
(oversize) and some which will pass the lower sieve (undersize).

3.3
constant mass
successive weighings after drying at least 1 h apart not differing by more than 0,1 %
NOTE In many cases constant mass can be achieved after a test portion has been dried for a pre-
determined period in a specified oven at (110 ± 5) °C. Test laboratories can determine the time required to

The article discusses EN 933-11:2009, a European Standard that provides a method for testing the geometrical properties of coarse recycled aggregates. This method helps to identify and estimate the proportions of different materials present in the aggregates. The standard recommends using this test for type testing and disputes, while other methods can be used for factory production control as long as they have a suitable relationship with the reference method. It is important to note that this method is not suitable for lightweight aggregates specified in EN 13055 series. Additionally, if any dangerous substances are encountered during the testing process, they should be handled according to the regulations in the specific location.
