Overview
EN 1367-3:2001 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the boiling test for "Sonnenbrand basalt". This test evaluates the thermal and weathering properties of basalt aggregates, specifically detecting the presence of "Sonnenbrand"-a type of rock decay triggered by atmospheric conditions leading to grey/white star-shaped spots and hairline cracks, ultimately causing disintegration of the basalt. The standard applies to whole rock pieces and graded coarse basalt aggregates, providing a method to assess durability and resistance to thermal weathering.
The standard is part of a broader series of test methods related to aggregates’ physical, mechanical, and chemical properties, ensuring consistent quality control in construction materials across Europe.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
EN 1367-3 covers the detection of "Sonnenbrand" in basalt rock and graded aggregates, and measures both mass loss and strength degradation after boiling. It applies to quarry stockpile samples and laboratory preparations suitable for testing.Test Procedures
- Visual Examination: Basalt pieces are boiled for 36 hours to induce and observe signs of "Sonnenbrand" such as cracking or disintegration.
- Mass Loss Measurement: Aggregates are boiled, dried, and sieved; mass loss after boiling helps quantify degradation.
- Strength Loss Measurement: Los Angeles abrasion tests or impact tests are conducted on boiled versus unboiled samples to assess strength reduction.
Apparatus and Methods
The test requires controlled drying ovens, boiling equipment, precision balances, sieves, and specialized steel cans with water-cooled lids. Strict adherence to temperature (110 ± 5 °C for drying, boiling at 100 °C) and timing (36 ± 1 hours boiling) is critical for reproducibility.Calculation and Reporting
Results include percentage loss in mass and strength, calculated to the nearest 0.1%. The standard provides formulas for loss percentages and specifies detailed reporting requirements on sample origin, observations, and test results.
Applications
Quality Control in Construction Aggregates
EN 1367-3 testing ensures that basalt aggregates used in construction maintain structural integrity and durability when exposed to thermal stresses and weathering, preventing premature failure in pavements, concrete, and asphalt.Aggregate Selection and Specification
Quarry operators and materials engineers use this standard to screen basalt for "Sonnenbrand" defects before processing aggregates, aiding decisions for material sourcing and suitability for different engineering applications.Durability Assessment for Infrastructure
The boiling test helps predict long-term performance under harsh environmental conditions, important in regions subject to freeze-thaw cycles, thermal shocks, or high moisture exposure.Research and Development
Material scientists apply EN 1367-3 methodologies when developing improved basalt aggregate treatments or additives to enhance weathering resistance.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this European Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
Sonnenbrand
type of rock decay that may be present in some basalts and which manifests itself under the influence
of atmospheric conditions
NOTE Sonnenbrand starts with the appearance of grey/white star-shaped spots. Usually
hairline cracks are generated radiating out from the spots and interconnecting them. This
reduces the strength of the mineral fabric, and as a result the rock decays to small particles.
