Overview

EN 14894:2021 specifies stamp marking requirements for transportable refillable LPG cylinders and metallic drums. It applies to steel, welded aluminium, composite cylinders and metallic drums manufactured to the relevant EN design standards (for example EN 1442, EN 14140, EN 12807, EN 14893, EN 13110, EN 14427) or equivalent national technical codes recognized by the competent authority. The standard defines what permanent and durable markings must appear on cylinders, where they shall be located, and minimum legibility and arrangement requirements. Note that RID/ADR and the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED, 2010/35/EU) take precedence where applicable (including the π‑mark).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Covers refillable LPG cylinders and metallic drums (referred to as “cylinders” throughout the document).
    • Does not replace ADR/RID labelling requirements for hazard/product phrases.
  • Stamp marking groups and layout
    • Markings are grouped into three ordered groups: manufacturing (top), operational (middle) and certification (bottom). Additional markings must not cause confusion.
  • Types of marks

The standard EN 14894:2021 provides essential guidelines for the marking of transportable refillable LPG cylinders and metallic drums, ensuring clarity and safety in the identification of these items. This document is pivotal for manufacturers and suppliers within the LPG sector, as it outlines specific stamp marking requirements applicable to various types of cylinders, including steel, welded aluminum, and composite materials, all of which abide by recognized standards or technical codes acknowledged by the relevant Competent Authority. A significant strength of EN 14894:2021 lies in its comprehensive scope. By including detailed specifications for steel LPG cylinders (manufactured under the standards EN 1442, EN 14140, EN 12807), metallic drums (aligned with EN 14893), and aluminum and composite cylinders (following EN 13110 and EN 14427 respectively), this standard ensures a broad applicability across different manufacturing processes. The clarity in defining each category is crucial for maintaining industry compliance and promoting consistency in marking practices. Furthermore, the document also emphasizes the importance of existing regulations such as RID/ADR, acknowledging these as having precedence over the standard itself. This recognition reinforces the relevance of EN 14894:2021 within the larger framework of regulatory compliance, providing users with the necessary context concerning safety and transport legislation. While the standard delineates the marking for cylinders, it notably does not cover product, hazard, or safety-phrase labeling, indicating a focused approach. Users are advised to seek additional regulations as required by ADR or other legislative requirements, thus pointing to the need for a comprehensive understanding of both EN 14894:2021 and other applicable regulations for full compliance. In summary, EN 14894:2021 is a crucial standard for marking requirements pertaining to LPG equipment and accessories, serving a vital role in ensuring safety and clarity in the transportable LPG sector. Its strengths in scope, regulatory alignment, and clarity make it an indispensable resource for industry stakeholders.
