Overview
CEN/TS 17779:2022 is a European Technical Specification established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard specifies a precise analytical method for extracting phosphorus that is soluble in neutral ammonium citrate from organo-mineral fertilizers. Designed to support accurate phosphorus quantification, the method facilitates the use of ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry) for subsequent phosphorus determination. The standard applies specifically to organo-mineral fertilizers and ensures consistent, reliable phosphorus extraction under controlled conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the method for extracting phosphorus soluble in neutral ammonium citrate from organo-mineral fertilizers.
- Extraction Principle: Extraction is carried out at 65 °C using a neutral ammonium citrate (pH 7) solution.
- Sample Preparation: Sampling follows principles outlined in EN 1482, adapted for organo-mineral fertilizers.
- Reagent Preparation: Detailed preparation of neutral ammonium citrate solution, including exact pH adjustment with ammonium hydroxide to maintain neutrality at 20 °C.
- Apparatus Needed:
- Beakers (2 L capacity)
- Erlenmeyer flasks (200 ml - 250 ml)
- pH-meter for solution calibration
- Thermostatically controlled water bath at 65 ± 2 °C with stirrer
- Phosphate-free dry pleated filters
- Extraction Procedure:
- Accurate weighing of test portions (1 g or 3 g)
- Heating ammonium citrate solution and mixing with the test sample
- Incubation with stirring for exactly 1 hour
- Cooling and quantitative dilution
- Filtration and collection of clear filtrate for phosphorus analysis
- Phosphorus Determination: The extracted phosphorus is determined as per CEN/TS 17774 using ICP-AES.
Applications
This standard is critical for laboratories and manufacturers involved in the production, quality control, and regulatory compliance of organo-mineral fertilizers. Key practical applications include:
- Quality Assurance: Enables accurate measurement of phosphorus availability in fertilizers to meet regulatory and market requirements.
- Research and Development: Assists in evaluating phosphorus solubility and bioavailability in novel organo-mineral fertilizer formulations.
- Environmental Compliance: Helps assess nutrient release characteristics, supporting sustainable fertilizer use and reducing environmental impact.
- Regulatory Reporting: Provides standardized methodology aligned with European regulations for fertilizer nutrient content declarations.
- Agricultural Optimization: Supports agronomists and soil scientists in selecting appropriate fertilizers based on phosphorus solubility.
Related Standards
- CEN/TS 17774: Specifies the determination of specific elements, including phosphorus, by ICP-AES after extraction by water. This method complements CEN/TS 17779 by detailing the analytical detection technique post-extraction.
- EN 1482 (all parts): Provides guidelines for sampling and sample preparation of fertilizers and liming materials, ensuring representativeness and reproducibility.
- Other Fertilizer Standards under CEN/TC 260: These standards cover various fertilizers and liming materials, establishing consistent testing and labeling requirements across Europe.
