Overview
prEN ISO 20957-7 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies additional specific safety requirements and test methods for stationary training equipment, particularly rowing machines. This standard complements the general safety requirements outlined in ISO 20957-1 and applies to rowing machines classified under classes S (studio professional use), H (home use), and I (inclusive professional use). The standard ensures rowing machines meet stringent safety, accuracy, and performance criteria, making them safe and reliable for diverse users in various environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard addresses stationary rowing equipment that includes a moving seat simulating rowing motion. It integrates with ISO 20957-1 for general safety and covers additional requirements unique to rowing machines.Classification
Rowing machines are classified by:- Usage Classes
- Class S: Professional/commercial studio use
- Class H: Domestic home use
- Class I: Inclusive professional use for people with special needs
- Accuracy Classes (for training data display equipment)
- Class A: High accuracy
- Class B: Medium accuracy
- Class C: Low accuracy
- Usage Classes
Safety Requirements
Important safety aspects include:- Protection against squeeze, shear, and reciprocating hazards within accessible areas
- Safeguards around transmission elements, rotating parts, fans, and flywheels
- Limits on temperature rise of accessible surfaces (≤65 °C) to prevent burns
- Robust seat design that resists derailment under multidirectional loads of ≥100 N
- Load bearing capability to withstand 2.5 times the maximum user weight, ensuring durability and stability
Test Methods
The standard specifies detailed testing protocols to verify compliance with safety and performance requirements:- Dimensional checks, visual and tactile examinations
- Performance and endurance tests
- Load tests for ropes, belts, chains, and attachments
- Temperature rise measurement on accessible surfaces
- Stability and intrinsic loading tests, including tests specific to accuracy class A equipment
Additional Provisions
Where rowing machines include accessories for other exercises, these must also comply with ISO 20957-1 and other relevant parts of the series.
Applications
prEN ISO 20957-7 serves manufacturers, distributors, and users of stationary rowing machines in multiple settings:
Fitness Centers and Studios
Ensures professional-grade rowing machines used in gyms meet rigorous safety and performance standards for frequent use by various athletes.Home Fitness Equipment
Guarantees safe, durable, and reliable equipment designed for home use with appropriate accuracy and minimal risk of injury.Rehabilitation and Inclusive Use
Special provisions for inclusive use (Class I) enable safe utilization of rowing machines by individuals with disabilities in clinical or rehabilitative environments.Product Development and Certification
Provides a framework for manufacturers to design, test, and certify rowing machines that meet international safety and quality benchmarks, facilitating market access and enhancing consumer confidence.
