Overview
EN ISO 25197:2020/A11:2023 is a European standard published by CEN that specifies requirements for electrical and electronic control systems used in small craft. This amendment (A11) updates the original EN ISO 25197:2020, focusing on control systems responsible for steering, shifting, and throttle functions. The standard supports conformity with EU Directive 2013/53/EU, which regulates recreational craft and personal watercraft safety and performance. It offers guidance and technical specifications to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient operation of small craft control systems in various environmental and operational conditions.
Key Topics
- Electrical/Electronic Control Systems: The standard covers the design, installation, and performance criteria for electronic and electric systems controlling steering mechanisms, throttle, and gear shifting on small watercraft.
- Safety and Reliability Requirements: It ensures systems are robust under foreseeable maritime conditions, including emergency scenarios such as remote rudder steering.
- Conformance to EU Directives: Aligns with the essential requirements of Directive 2013/53/EU, facilitating legal compliance across member states.
- Environmental and EMC Testing: Mandates testing for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), shock, salt mist, and climatic conditions to guarantee system durability and function in demanding marine environments.
- Component and System Testing: References international standards for testing plastic materials, electric ignition protection (ISO 8846), remote steering systems (ISO 8848), hydraulic steering (ISO 10592), and AC/DC electrical installations (ISO 13297).
- Documentation and User Guidance: Specifies the information to be included in the owner’s manual for safe operation and maintenance of control systems.
Applications
EN ISO 25197:2020/A11:2023 is essential for:
- Small Craft Manufacturers: Designing and certifying electrical/electronic control systems for steering, throttle, and gear shifting.
- Maritime Equipment Suppliers: Developing compliant components and sub-systems that integrate with vessel control platforms.
- Marine System Installers and Maintenance Providers: Ensuring installed control systems meet performance and safety requirements.
- Certifying Bodies and Regulators: Evaluating small craft to verify conformity with EU safety regulations.
- Small Craft Operators and Owners: Relying on standardized, tested control systems to enhance vessel handling, safety, and operational reliability.
Related Standards
EN ISO 25197:2020/A11:2023 is closely linked with several international standards addressing various aspects of small craft equipment and environmental testing, including:
- ISO 8846:2017 - Protection against ignition of surrounding flammable gases.
- ISO 8848:2022 - Remote steering systems for small craft.
- ISO 10592:2022 - Hydraulic steering systems.
- ISO 13297:2021 - Electrical installations (Alternating and direct current) on small craft.
- IEC 60068 Series - Environmental testing for shock, salt mist, and other conditions.
- IEC 61000-4 Series - Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and measurement techniques.
- ASTM B117:2016 - Salt spray (fog) testing for corrosion resistance.
These standards collectively ensure that small craft control systems are designed, tested, and maintained in accordance with best practices for safety, durability, and environmental resilience.
