Overview

EN 3155-078:2019 is a European Standard developed by CEN under the Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD-STAN). This standard specifies the product requirements, characteristics, and test methods for male electrical contacts size 22, type A, crimp, class S used in aerospace elements of connection according to EN 3155-002. It complements EN 3155-001, which provides general technical specifications, and is associated with female contacts defined in EN 3155-079.

Targeted primarily at the aerospace industry, this standard ensures high reliability, safety, and uniformity across electrical connectors for use in harsh aerospace environments, covering operating temperatures from −65 °C to 200 °C.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Defines requirements for male electrical contacts size 22, type A, crimp style, class S, ensuring compatibility with EN 2997 connectors.

  • Material and Design
Contacts are made from copper alloy with a gold-plated surface for corrosion resistance and electrical performance. The maximum mass is 0.16g, and dimensions follow precise aerospace tolerances.

  • Marking and Identification
Contacts use a color-coding system per ISO 8843 for easy identification, with green color bands indicating size 22 contacts.

  • Permissible Cable Sizes
Supports conductors sized from AWG 26 to AWG 22, with rated currents listed for each wire size to maintain electrical integrity.

  • Crimping and Tooling
Specifies crimping tools conforming to SAE-AS22520 and insertion/extraction tool requirements according to SAE-AS81969, ensuring proper installation and maintenance procedures.

  • Testing Requirements
A broad and rigorous range of tests aligned with EN 2591 series ensures the contacts withstand mechanical, thermal, electrical, and environmental stresses typical in aerospace applications.
    Key tests include:

    • Contact resistance at low and rated current
    • Endurance at 200 °C for 1000 hours
    • Rapid temperature changes
    • Salt mist, fluid, and ozone resistance
    • Shock and vibration withstand
    • Mechanical durability and tensile strength of crimps
  • Associated Standards
    EN 3155-078 mandates use alongside:

    • EN 3155-001 (technical specifications for electrical contacts)
    • EN 3155-002 (list and utilization of contacts)
    • EN 3155-079 (female counterpart contacts for size 22)
    • EN 2997 (aerospace circular connectors)

Applications

The EN 3155-078:2019 standard applies to the manufacture, testing, and use of male electrical contacts for aerospace connectors employed in:

  • Aircraft electrical wiring harnesses requiring durable, high-performance, and reliable connections.
  • Spacecraft and satellite electrical systems, where contacts must endure extreme temperature cycles and aggressive environments.
  • Defence and military aerospace equipment needing standardized, interchangeable connector parts with proven mechanical and electrical robustness.
  • Commercial aerospace industries following strict European standards for connectors to ensure safety and compatibility across multiple suppliers and aircraft manufacturers.

These contacts are integral to building aerospace wiring components with guaranteed functionality under high-vibration, thermal stress, and corrosive conditions.

Related Standards

  • EN 3155-001: Technical specifications common to all aerospace electrical contacts in the series, providing test methods and definitions.
  • EN 3155-002: Classification and utilization guide for electrical contacts in aerospace connector systems.
  • EN 3155-079: Defines the matching female contacts size 22, type A, crimp, class S.
