Overview
EN 60335-2-52:2003/A12:2019 (CENELEC amendment A12) is the harmonized European safety standard that specifies particular requirements for electrical oral hygiene appliances (for example, electric toothbrushes and oral irrigators). This amendment updates Part 2-52 of the EN 60335 series to clarify scope, marking and instructions, temperature limits, and user-safety provisions. It is intended to address the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by these household and similar electrical appliances while recognizing some user scenarios (e.g., unsupervised use by very young children) are not generally covered.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and foreseeable hazards: The standard focuses on hazards encountered by all users in household and similar environments but generally does not take into account hazards from children playing with appliances, unsupervised use by very young children (including toothbrushes and oral irrigators), use of oral irrigators by very young children, or maintenance/cleaning performed by children. It also notes that very vulnerable people may require protection beyond this standard.
- Marking and instructions: Instructions must state when a Class III appliance is supplied from a detachable power supply that it shall be used only with the provided power supply. Class III appliances must be supplied at the marked safety extra-low voltage (SELV); battery-operated appliances have specific exceptions for primary or externally charged secondary batteries.
- Single push‑button operation: A single push button for multiple functions (including on/off) is acceptable if the appliance does not present a mechanical hazard and there is immediate user feedback (e.g., motion or vibration). Example: toothbrush modes slow/fast/off.
- Temperature rise limits and testing: During tests, temperature rises are continuously monitored. Maximum temperature rise limits under normal use are defined (Table Z101): bare metal 40 K; coated metal 45 K; glass/ceramic 55 K; plastic and plastic coating (>0.4 mm) 60 K, with specific rules for coated surfaces and thin coatings.
- Standards housekeeping: The amendment modifies definitions, deletes certain Part 2 additions, and adjusts clauses on protection against access to live parts, heating, stability and mechanical hazards.
Applications and users
This standard is used by:
- Manufacturers and designers of electric toothbrushes, oral irrigators and related oral-hygiene appliances for product design, testing and CE marking.
- Notified bodies and testing laboratories assessing conformity to the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU).
- Regulatory and compliance professionals, safety engineers, and purchasers specifying safe household oral-care equipment.
Keywords: EN 60335-2-52, oral hygiene appliances, electric toothbrush safety, oral irrigators, CENELEC amendment A12, temperature rise limits, Class III marking, Low Voltage Directive.
Related standards
- EN 60335-1 (Part 1: general requirements) - this Part 2 is to be used together with Part 1 for conformity assessment and CE marking under the Low Voltage Directive.
