Overview

EN 60335-2-70:2002/A1:2007 is a CENELEC amendment to the European adoption of IEC 60335-2-70 that defines particular safety requirements for electrically operated milking machines. It supplements EN 60335-2-70:2002 and clarifies marking, instructions and mechanical strength requirements specific to milking equipment. Note: this item was initially linked to the LVD (2014/35/EU) but no expertise was available to draft Common Modifications - it is therefore not to be offered anymore in that context.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and hierarchy
    • This document is a product-family standard for safety of milking appliances and takes precedence over horizontal/generic standards when overlapping.
    • Where a Part 2 standard does not add requirements for a hazard, Part 1 applies.
  • Marking and instructions
    • Appliances or sub-assemblies not rated IPX6 and likely to be exposed to water-jet cleaning must be marked “DO NOT HOSE” or display the ISO 7000-0073 symbol combined with the ISO 3864-1 prohibition sign (except colours).
    • If the “Do not hose” symbol is used, its meaning must be explained in the instructions.
    • Minimum text heights specified: 5 mm (headlines), 3 mm (other lettering); the “Do not hose” symbol must be at least 25 mm high and visible after installation.
  • Mechanical strength
    • Impact energy requirement is increased to 1 J (modification to mechanical strength clause).
  • Normative references added
    • ISO 3864-1 (safety signs), ISO 13732-1 (ergonomics - hot surfaces), and IEC 60364-7-705 (electrical installations for agricultural premises) are referenced to support marking, thermal and installation aspects.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of milking machines and milking system sub-assemblies use this standard to design safe, compliant equipment.
  • Compliance engineers and test laboratories reference it for type testing, marking verification, and mechanical strength assessment.
  • Farm equipment installers and operators consult the marking and instructions requirements to ensure safe installation and use (especially regarding cleaning practices).
  • Standards bodies and certification/inspection organizations use the amendment text when assessing conformity to the EN/IEC 60335 series.

Related standards

  • EN/IEC 60335-1 (General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances)
  • IEC 60364-7-705 / HD 60364-7-705 (agricultural electrical installations)
  • ISO 3864-1 (safety signs) and ISO 13732-1 (hot surface assessment)
