General Information
Overview
EN 61079-3:1993 (IEC 61079-3:1993) specifies methods for electrical measurements of overall performance of satellite receiver systems composed of an outdoor unit and a DBS tuner unit for direct reception in the 12 GHz band. It defines test conditions and procedures (but not pass/fail limits) for channels referenced to WARC BS‑77 / RARC SAT‑83 and systems per CCIR Recommendation 650. The standard is intended to measure performance items that cannot be derived from testing the outdoor unit or tuner separately.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and setup
- Tests apply to a combined outdoor unit + DBS tuner using the manufacturer‑specified cable (maximum length of stated range).
- Measurements must be performed in an RF‑quiet environment (or screened room) with controlled environmental and power‑supply conditions (voltage/frequency fluctuations ±2%, supply harmonics ≤5%).
- Test signals and reference conditions
- Baseband video, audio and digital test signals per system (Digital sub‑carrier/NTSC, B‑MAC, C‑/D‑/D2‑MAC).
- RF input may be applied via direct feed to the SHF converter or by radiating to the receiving antenna; input levels expressed as dB(mW) (direct) or dB(W/m2) (radiated).
- Standard measuring conditions (e.g., audio off, digital sub‑carrier off unless specified).
- Measurement methods (Section 4)
- Sensitivity - video S/N vs input level (direct: −90 to −70 dB(mW) in 2 dB steps; radiated: −114 to −94 dB(W/m2) in 2 dB steps).
- Truncation noise - subjective picture (and sound for digital sub‑carrier/NTSC) assessment using pulse tests.
- Spurious response
- Differential gain and phase relative to chrominance sub‑carrier
- Suppression of energy dispersal signal
- Bit error rate vs input signal level
- Instruments and requirements
- Test signal generator, RF modulator (carrier-to-noise >30 dB at −40 dB(mW)), CW generator, band/low‑pass filters, video noise meter, picture monitor.
- Scope limitations
- The standard describes measurement methods only; normative limit values are outside its scope. Decoder measurements are covered in IEC 1079 Parts 4 and 5.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers and R&D teams - validation of receiver system design and combined‑unit interactions.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - repeatable procedures for performance characterization and comparative testing.
- Field engineers and installers - guidance for on‑site verification of overall receiver performance and troubleshooting of combined outdoor + tuner setups.
- Product compliance and QA - factory acceptance testing and documentation of sensitivity, BER, and picture/audio quality metrics.

METHODS OF MEASUREMENT ON RECEIVERS
FOR SATELLITE BROADCAST TRANSMISSIONS
IN THE 12 GHz BAND
Part 3: Electrical measurements
of overall performance of receiver systems
comprising an outdoor unit and
a DBS tuner unit
Section 1: General
1.1 Scope
This part of IEC 1079 applies to the conditions and methods of measurement of overall
performance of receiver systems comprising an outdoor unit and a DBS tuner unit for
direct reception of satellite broadcast transmissions in the 12 GHz band. The channels are
those defined by WARC BS-77 and RARC SAT-83 and the systems those of CCIR
Recommendation 650 [1]•.
The specifications of the limit values of the various parameters of the receiver systems are
outside the scope of this standard.
Although individual pe rformance of an outdoor unit and a DBS tuner unit can be measured
by the methods defined by pa rts 1 and 2 of IEC 1079, measurements of overall
performance of a receiver system consisting of an indoor unit and a DBS tuner unit are
also necessary for individual receiver installations.
A decoder for baseband and data signals may be included in the receiver. Methods of
measurement of the decoder, however, are described in pa rts 4 and 5 of IEC 1079.
NOTE - Measurement items for overall pe rformance are confined to those which cannot be obtained by
the measurements of each individual unit or may be affected by the combination of the units in the
receiver.
1.2 Normative references
