Overview
FprEN IEC 60674-3-1:2026 - "Plastic films for electrical purposes – Part 3: Specifications for individual materials – Sheet 1: Biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films for capacitors" is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted by CENELEC (CLC). This document specifies the requirements and classification for biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films designed for use as dielectric materials in capacitors. The standard addresses essential characteristics such as physical and electrical properties, dimensions, and quality control, providing a basis for uniform quality in the manufacturing and supply of capacitor-grade PP films.
Key Topics
Material Types and Classification
The standard classifies polypropylene films according to surface characteristics (smooth or rough) and treatment (untreated or pre-treated for vacuum metallization). It covers three main types:- Type 1: Smooth surfaces
- Type 2: At least one rough surface
- Type 3: High electric strength for thin films
Dimensional Requirements
- Thickness, width, and roll characteristics are specified, referencing standard measurement methods for accuracy and repeatability.
- Preferred thicknesses are provided for each film type to suit various capacitor applications, ensuring consistency.
Physical and Electrical Properties
- Requirements for density, melting point, tensile strength, elongation at break, surface and volume resistivity, dissipation factor, and relative permittivity.
- Electric strength and the tolerance of electrical weak spots are crucial for ensuring reliability in high-voltage and precision capacitor applications.
Pre-treatment and Compatibility
- Corona treatment and pre-treatment on one or both sides facilitate vacuum metallization and compatibility with impregnants used in capacitor manufacturing.
- Guidelines for assessing compatibility with dielectric fluids and controlling liquid absorption.
Roll and Labelling Standards
- Specifications for windability, joins, roll width, core size, and labelling to ensure ease of handling and traceability in manufacturing processes.
Applications
Biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films specified by this standard are essential as dielectric materials in various types of capacitors, including:
AC and DC capacitors
Used in power electronics, energy storage, and filtering applications, requiring films with high electrical strength and reliability.Power factor correction capacitors
Improved efficiency in electrical distribution systems.Pulse and snubber capacitors
Used in industrial electronics, demanding materials that maintain physical and electrical properties under rapid voltage changes.Consumer electronics and automotive capacitors
The films must meet strict quality and consistency requirements to guarantee product safety and performance in high-volume production.
This standard enables manufacturers and users to specify, test, and purchase films with established electrical and physical performance, supporting increased safety, efficiency, and compatibility across capacitor applications.
