Overview

EN 61754-4-100:2016/prA1:2026 is an amendment to the European standard for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, specifically targeting the SC connector family. This amendment, published by CENELEC (CLC), refines the requirements and interfaces for simplified receptacle SC-PC (Physical Contact) connector interfaces. The document is part of ongoing international efforts to standardize fibre optic connector interfaces, ensuring reliability, interoperability, and performance in fibre optic communication systems.

The update supports manufacturers, installers, and users of fibre optic technology in maintaining compatibility and aligning with evolving technical requirements. The amendment addresses references to related international standards, interface descriptions, and updates to specifications that influence product consistency and quality across multiple markets.

Key Topics

  • SC Connector Family: Focuses on the standardized interface for SC (Subscriber Connector) type fibre optic connectors, widely used in telecommunication and data networks.
  • Simplified Receptacle Interfaces: Emphasizes user-friendly, streamlined interfaces for SC-PC connectors, improving installation efficiency and reducing error rates in connecting optical fibres.
  • Updated Normative References: Modernizes reference documents to their latest editions to assure harmonization with global best practices, including IEC 61754-4 and IEC 61755-3, and the addition of IEC 63267-3 for multimode fibres.
  • Interface Specifications: Clarifies descriptions and parameters related to the physical and optical characteristics of SC-PC connectors, supporting consistent performance and reliable connectivity.
  • Technical Alignment: Aligns terminology and documentation with the latest international directives, ensuring that stakeholders are following the most accurate and up-to-date guidance for fibre connector interfaces.

Applications

EN 61754-4-100:2016/prA1:2026 provides significant practical value in several areas:

  • Telecommunications Networks: Enables telecom operators to adopt interoperable hardware, reducing compatibility issues in high-speed data transmission networks.
  • Data Centres: Maintains standardization in fibre patch panels and equipment, supporting scalable and reliable data infrastructure.
  • Industrial Automation: Facilitates secure, robust optical connections in industrial field devices and communication backbones.
  • Broadcast and Media: Ensures low-loss, high-consistency connections for high-definition media transmission.
  • Network Equipment Manufacturing: Supports design and production of fibre optic interfaces that conform to established SC connector definitions, promoting product reliability and easier integration.

Adherence to this amendment allows engineers, system integrators, and installers to benefit from a unified approach to SC-PC connector interfaces, minimizing risks of mismatched components and assuring high network performance.

Related Standards

To ensure comprehensive compliance and optimize performance for fibre optic systems, the following related standards are referenced or should be considered alongside this amendment:

  • IEC 61754-4 – Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components – Fibre optic connector interfaces – Part 4: Type SC connector family
  • IEC 61755-3 (all parts) – Connector optical interfaces for dispersion unshifted single-mode physically contacting fibres
  • IEC 63267-3 (all parts) – Connector optical interfaces for enhanced macro bend multimode fibres
  • Other parts of the EN 61754 series – Covering a broader spectrum of connector types and international requirements for fibre optic interconnects

Conclusion

The EN 61754-4-100:2016/prA1:2026 amendment reinforces interoperability, simplifies connector interfaces, and updates references for the SC connector family in fibre optic systems. By aligning with these international standards, organizations can ensure high performance, compatibility, and future-proofing in telecommunication, data centre, and industrial optical networks. This document is essential for all stakeholders involved in the manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of modern fibre optic infrastructure.
