Overview
EN IEC 61753-042-02:2026 is a European performance standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted by CENELEC (CLC). This standard focuses on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, specifically outlining the performance requirements for plug-pigtail-style and plug-receptacle-style OTDR reflecting devices. These devices are intended for operation within category C controlled environments, which typically include equipment rooms or similar settings with regulated temperature and humidity.
Designed to ensure compatibility, interoperability, and reliability, EN IEC 61753-042-02:2026 sets the minimum initial performance, testing, and measurement criteria for OTDR reflecting devices, supporting optical network testing and maintaining system integrity in broadband and telecommunication infrastructures.
Key Topics
Plug-Pigtail & Plug-Receptacle OTDR Reflecting Devices
The standard covers two main form factors:- Plug-pigtail-style: One end with a connector, the other end with an optical fibre tail.
- Plug-receptacle-style: Both ends feature standard connectors or ports.
Performance Testing in Controlled Environments
This standard addresses stringent performance requirements to be met in stable, indoor environments, mapped as Category C in IEC 61753-1.Optical Characteristics
- Attenuation (Insertion Loss)
- Wavelength Isolation (separation between passing and reflecting ranges)
- Return Loss (reflection properties at specific wavelengths)
- Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL)
- High optical power durability
- Mechanical robustness (shock, vibration, mating durability, tensile strength, temperature cycling, humidity tolerance)
Test Methods and Reporting
All specified tests must follow methods from the IEC 61300 series, ensuring consistent, repeatable, and auditable results.Device Structure
Examples of device internal structures include solutions based on chirped fibre Bragg grating (FBG) filters or thin-film filters (TFF), integrated into standard connector assemblies.
Applications
EN IEC 61753-042-02:2026 is highly relevant to manufacturers and operators of fibre optic networks, including:
Broadband and FTTH Networks
OTDR reflecting devices facilitate out-of-band Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing, enabling in-service monitoring of fibre optic links without disrupting active data transmission.Telecommunications Infrastructure
Widely used for maintenance and troubleshooting in access, metro, and core networks, these devices help quickly locate faults and characterize connection quality.Controlled Environment Installations
This standard focuses on device performance in controlled settings, ensuring reliability in equipment rooms and data centers where environmental conditions are regulated.Quality Assurance and Compliance
Ensures devices meet rigorous international standards for physical and optical performance, supporting procurement and deployment in global projects.

39 FOREWORD
40 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
41 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
42 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
43 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
44 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
45 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
46 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
47 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
48 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
49 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
50 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
51 interested IEC National Committees.
52 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
53 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
54 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
55 misinterpretation by any end user.
56 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
57 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
58 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
59 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
60 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
61 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
62 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
63 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
64 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
65 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
66 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
67 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
68 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
69 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
70 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
