Overview
prEN 61300-2-19:2025 defines a steady-state damp heat test method for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. The procedure evaluates how high humidity at a constant elevated temperature influences materials and optical performance (absorption, swelling, mechanical degradation and optical attenuation). The method is based on IEC 60068-2-78 and is prepared by IEC SC86B as a Committee Draft for Vote with a proposed stability date of 2033.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Assess suitability of devices to withstand prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperature without condensation on the device under test (DUT).
- Chamber requirements: The environmental chamber shall comply with IEC 60068-3-6 and be capable of producing and maintaining the specified temperature and relative humidity. Key points:
- Chamber volume at least five times the specimen volume.
- Temperature tolerance: ±2 °C; humidity tolerance: ±5 %.
- To maintain humidity tolerance, temperature differences in the working space must be limited (short-term differences < 1,5 °C).
- Condensation must not form on the specimen; condensed water must be drained and not reused unless purified.
- Injected moisture must be remote from the specimen and not directed onto it.
- Humidification media: Use steam or distilled/demineralized/deionized water with resistivity ≥ 50 MΩ·m at 23 °C; chamber internals cleaned before use to avoid contamination.
- Mounting and fixturing: Mounting devices must have low thermal conductivity and minimal influence on heat and humidity exchange; specimens must be thermally isolated from radiant heat sources.
- Measurements and monitoring: Optical monitoring (attenuation and return loss) shall follow IEC 61300-3-3. If requested, in-test optical measurements are typically performed at intervals up to 1 hour.
- Preconditioning and sequence: Precondition per IEC 61300-1 (minimum 2 h for connectors/passive components, 4 h for closures). Perform initial examinations per the relevant IEC 61753 performance standard or IEC 62005 reliability documents, condition in the chamber for the specified duration, allow recovery, then perform final examinations and measurements.
Applications
- Design verification and material selection for connectors, closures and passive fibre components.
- Qualification testing for storage, transport and tropical/humid environments.
- Manufacturing quality assurance and reliability assessment focused on moisture-related degradation.
- R&D benchmarking of moisture absorption and its impact on optical performance.

39 FOREWORD
40 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
41 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
42 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
43 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
44 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
45 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
46 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
47 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
48 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
49 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
50 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
51 interested IEC National Committees.
52 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
53 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
54 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
55 misinterpretation by any end user.
56 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
57 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
58 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
59 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
60 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
61 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
62 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
63 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
64 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
65 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
66 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
67 Publications.
68 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
69 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
70 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
71 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

97 INTRODUCTION
98 This part of IEC 61300 provides a test method of high humidity at constant temperature without
99 condensation on the DUT over a prescribed period. This test is performed to evaluate the
100 specimen as it is influenced by the absorption and diffusion of moisture and moisture vapour.

110 1 Scope
111 This part of IEC 61300 details a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic device
112 to withstand the environmental condition of high humidity and high temperature which can occur
113 in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation
114 of effects of high humidity at constant temperature over a given period. Absorption of moisture
115 may result in swelling that would destroy functional utility, cause loss of physical strength, and
