Optical fibre cables - Part 1-110: Generic specification - Basic optical cable test procedures - Mechanical tests methods - Kink, Method E10
IEC 60794-1-110:2025 defines test procedures used to establishing uniform requirements for mechanical performance - kink. It applies to optical fibre cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. IEC 60794-1-2 gives general requirements, definitions and a complete reference guide to test methods of all types. This first edition cancels and replaces Method E10 of the first edition of IEC 60794-1-21:2015, which will be withdrawn. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: addition of "4.7"; addition of "Annex A".

Overview
EN IEC 60794-1-110:2025 (Method E10) specifies a standardised kink test used to establish uniform mechanical performance requirements for optical fibre cables. The method evaluates whether a cable kinks when bent to a specified minimum loop diameter. The first edition is a technical revision that replaces Method E10 in IEC 60794-1-21:2015 and adds clause 4.7 and Annex A.
This procedure applies to optical fibre cables used with telecommunications equipment and to hybrid cables that combine optical fibres and electrical conductors. The test is referenced by IEC 60794-1-2 for general conditions and terminology.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Determine the loop diameter at which kinking begins and verify compliance with a specified minimum no-kink diameter.
- Sample requirements: Use a finished cable sample long enough to form a complete loop as shown in the standard illustration.
- Procedure: Form an initial loop, reduce the loop diameter by pulling the two ends slowly in the plane of the loop, stop at onset of kinking, measure the loop perimeter C and calculate equivalent diameter d = C/π.
- Apparatus: Typically performed by hand; optionally use a tensile machine for rigid or high-fibre-count cables or when improved repeatability/data are required.
- Reproducibility caution: Test results can show limited reproducibility; therefore, minimum no-kink requirements should be conservative.
- Reporting and specification details: Clause 4.6 lists details to specify (minimum loop diameter, test temperature, number of samples). Clause 4.7 adds mandatory reporting items (sample description, applied force if using a tensile machine, deviations).
- Annex A: Provides recommended conditions and an example of a tensile-machine setup for cases where manual testing is impractical or repeatability is required.
Applications
- Qualification and routine verification of cable mechanical robustness for installation and handling.
- Design validation for outdoor, duct, or high fibre-count cables where kink resistance is critical.
- Comparative evaluation of cable designs during R&D, material selection, or quality control when using the tensile-machine option for improved repeatability.
Related Standards
- IEC 60794-1-2: General guidance, atmospheric conditions and definitions used across Part 1 test methods.
- IEC 60794-1-1: Generic specification - general requirements for optical fibre cables.
Practical value: This standard provides a simple, repeatable approach to assess kink behaviour. When specifying or reporting tests, include the minimum loop diameter, environmental conditions, sample description and, if applicable, tensile-machine forces to ensure meaningful and comparable results.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
