Overview
EN 60371-3-7:1995 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted by the CLC. This specification focuses on insulating materials based on mica, specifically detailing the properties and requirements for polyester film mica paper with an epoxy resin binder designed for single conductor taping. The material is manufactured and supplied in flexible roll form, with nominal thickness ranging from 0.07 mm to 0.12 mm.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure uniformity, reliability, and performance of mica-based polyester film tapes used in electrical insulation of single conductors. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and industries can achieve consistent quality that meets international expectations for electrical insulating materials.
Key Topics
Material Composition: The standard includes mica paper reinforced with polyester (PET) film and an epoxy resin binder. This combination provides excellent electrical insulating properties, mechanical strength, and thermal stability.
Specifications and Tolerances:
- Thickness: Nominal thickness between 0.07 mm to 0.12 mm.
- Width: Preferred widths include 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 mm with specified tolerances.
- Mass per area: Defined mica content, polyester film grammage, and resin content with acceptable tolerances to maintain material consistency.
Mechanical and Electrical Requirements:
- Electric strength: Minimum breakdown voltage of 50 kV/mm ensuring high dielectric resistance.
- Tensile strength: Minimum tensile requirements depending on polyester film thickness (e.g., 25 N/10 mm for 23 gm PET film).
- Stiffness: To be agreed upon in purchase contracts, tested per IEC methods.
- The tape must have smooth, defect-free surfaces and be capable of continuous unrolling without damage.
Manufacturing and Testing Standards:
- Mica paper compliant with IEC 371-3.
- Polyester films meeting IEC 674-3-2 specifications.
- Testing methods as per IEC 371-2 and IEC 243-1 to verify mechanical and electrical properties.
Packaging and Delivery:
- Tape rolls wound on cores with no sharp edges (55 mm or 76 mm inner diameter).
- Clear marking of material description, width, length, batch number, manufacturing date, and storage instructions.
- Limitations on the number and length of joins in roll consignments to ensure quality.
Applications
EN 60371-3-7 polyester film mica paper with epoxy resin binder is primarily used for electrical insulation in single conductor taping. This makes it ideal for industries and products requiring:
- High-voltage electrical equipment insulation.
- Motors, generators, transformers, and coils where mica-based tapes ensure thermal and electrical stability.
- Insulation in harsh operational environments where resistance to heat, electrical stress, and mechanical wear is critical.
- Applications requiring a flexible, durable insulating tape that can be processed easily for winding around conductors.
By complying with this specification, manufacturers ensure materials deliver reliable dielectric strength and mechanical integrity, contributing to the longevity and safety of electrical devices and installations.
Related Standards
EN 60371-3-7:1995 is part of a wider series of standards on mica-based insulating materials, including:
- EN 60371-1: Definitions and general requirements: Sets foundational principles for mica-based insulation materials.
- EN 60371-2: Methods of test: Specifies test procedures for evaluating mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties.
- EN 60371-3-2: Mica paper: Focuses on mica paper materials specifically.
- IEC 674-3-2: Plastic films for electrical purposes: Defines requirements for polyester films like PET used in electrical insulation.
Together, these standards form a comprehensive framework for quality and performance assurance across mica-based varnished and composite insulating materials.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
3) They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter. The text of this standard is based on the following documents:
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
International Standard IEC 371-3-7 has been prepared by IEC by sub-committee 15C:
